MG MGB Technical - Fuel Pump

Hi All, hope someone can help! I have replaced the "O"ring washers on the inlet and outlet of the fuel pump on my '76 GT. However, took both bolts off but failed to realise that the hole in the bolts for the inlet/outlet are different sizes? DOH!! Can someone tell me, which hole is for which? Is the bolt with the larger size hole to go on the inlet (Tank to pump) or outlet (Pump to filter/carbs)?

Also, any ideas on how to keep the holes lined up in the bolt and pipe other than a very small screwdriver and equal half turns with the bolt to ensure they match up? A faff but it does work. I also found that with the new washers, once tightened the bolts take the holes (and feed pipe) round to a point where the fuel pipe won't reach! Incredibly frustrating!! Any ideas on this as well other than trying the original washers on the bolt which defeats replacing them!

Thanks in anticipation of your replies!

Kind regards

Martin.

I don't know which has the larger hole, but you don't need to line up the hole in the bolt with the hole in the pipe, just position the pipe where you need it and tighten the bolt.

Martin, the pipe connections that the bolts go through are "banjo" connectors. If you look inside they have a recess to allow the fuel to flow through the hole and around the fitting to the pipe. As Dave says line the pipes up and tighten as required.
The hole in the bolts should be the same size but as they're not it should make absolutely no difference which way around you put them. The smaller one presents a restriction to the flow and given the choice I would put the smaller one on the (low pressure) inlet.

Hi again all, many thanks for your replies, I now know I'm not being stupid! MGMike, I think I will do as you suggest and put the bolt with the smaller hole on the inlet pipe.

Thank you all for your valuable help.

Kind rwegards

Martin.
