MG MGB Technical - Hard Top

Does anyone know if a hard top for a roadster would be dependent on year ? I have a chance to buy one from a 72 car but mine's a 77.

Charles,
As far as I am aware there is no difference in the hardtop for all models. The hardtop fixes in three places - the tear-drops on the rear deck, an angle bracket at the hood frame mounting point, and on the windscreen clips. I think all MGBs of any age have these three points standardised. Certainly, the 72 and 79 models will be identical as they both have the later folding soft-top. My factory hardtop is a bit of a pig to fit, but once on properly it makes the car much more snug and weatherproof.

I also have a 77 MGB, and I recently bought a factory hardtop that was used on an early 70's one, it's a bit of a struggle to get on but, as Mike says, the tight fot makes for a better seal.

yes your hard top will fit, the early steel dash cars had a sligtly different hardtop, something to do with with the sun visors, but they fit also, now if only the mazda miata top would fit a "b".

Just to say I bought the hardtop and fitted it.
What a difference! Really makes it nice and snug inside. Highly recommended for winter driving.

come on people mgb roadsterS are the best to drive in the rain. there is no need for a hard top. you dont even need the rag top up. thats the best time to drive

Hmm - I see MGMAN (whoever he is) lives in California. If he lived in Western Scotland, as I do, he might have a different attitude!

5 years ago I spotted a hardtop sitting on a badly rusted B (chrome bumper). After talking to the owner I could have it for $200. I put it on and it was such a difference in drive. Since than I have barely driven with the top down (shame on me) because it is such a hassle to take the hardtop off when you are just by yourself. Why can MG not come up with the fully retractable automatic hardtop a la Mercedes( just kidding. The whole system would cost more than the value of the car. Just a tought!
If you like the hardtop, go for it!

PS.: Now I need parts for the hardtop. Where can I find them. It is the original factory hardtop.

Werner,
Victoria British and Brown & Gammons might have what you need. VB seems to have the best selection of bits.

I just purchased a header rail seal and the side locating brackets from B&G. My HT didn't come with them and have been having to use zip-ties (M-I-C-K-E-Y...). Not sure what B&G was using for the template, but the mounting brackets will never align with the locating brackets. Not even close. I guess I will try and return them when I go to the UK next and then purchase a new set for Victoria.

Has anyone had this same problem? My parts look exactly like the one's depicted in the Victoria British 2001 Fall catalog on page 62.

Cheers!
