MG MGB Technical - headlight bucket mounts - screw/bolt

Inteeresting thing that I thought I would pass along..My 74 was getting new seals behind the headlight bowl/adjusters. The screws were worn and rusty so I was going to take the ones from my 79. Here's the interesting part..the 79 has screws that just go into the sheet metal of the fender/bucket. There is no nut behind the bucket for screws to mount to.
So my question would be..when did they go from screws and nuts to sheet metal screws? Was it in the transition from Chrome bumper to rubber bumper?
I ask because I started a thread about bolt and screw kits for the B. My solution was to get stainless screws from Home Depot.

My '75 rubber bumper has the nuts for the headlight buckets just like my '73. My Moss catalog MGB-14 just shows one screw (8 reqd) for the headlight assy, but shows a different outer rim for the 1980 from the 1963-1979. My point, assuming that my catalog is correct, is that your '79 appears to have been modified. But these catalogs are not the definitive answer.

I also just replaced the headlight seals and removed rust and repainted the bowls on my 1970 MGB GT. I found that one side had machine screws holding it into little threaded plates attached to the inside of the wing. The other side simply has self tapping screws and no plates. I'm guessing one wing at least isn't original! Also each wing has a BL badge on it but that are unmatching too!

Up to Sept 76 they had screws, washers and nuts - after Sept 76 and for all replacements supplied ( even for earlier cars) they came with self tapping screws and washers.

The other thing to remember is that many of these cars have been modified over the years to keep them running. Dealer support died and, depending on the area you live in, independent garages with people familiar with the MGs were hard to find. I see a lot of "creative" solutions to problems on my cars. Sometimes, they need to be corrected and other times merely admired. Les
