MG MGB Technical - HIF4 German to English?

While researching my recent HIF4 problem, a found an outstanding web page on installing and tuning the SU HIF4.
http://www.mg-ammerland.de/technik/su_tuning.pdf
In fact, the whole Technik page of the site is outstanding!
http://www.mg-ammerland.de/

Unfortunantly, I know very little German, but they do have pictures, and I could deal with the nouns well enough. They also have a German edition of Bob Munchausen's heater valve page.

Bob, do you think this could work both ways, and get an English version of SU HIF 4 Vergaser Einstellung & Tuning for your new web site?

This is your all purpose translator. The only problem is--it's a very literal, word for word translation, which means that you'll be doing some interpretation yourself.

... and a lot of typing. I wasn't able to copy and paste from the PDF to babelfish.

Basic adjustment Float Stop routine cleaning absorber oil float the carburetor with the schwimmerkammer hold upward and covers remove. (Bild1) A ruler over the housing put. The more deeply lying nose of the float is to be appropriate for 1mm +/- 0.5 mm underneath the float chamber sealing surface. The measure can be adjusted with light pressure on the brass latch. 1 the three screws of the suction bell remove. The suction bell upward take off. Absorber feather/spring and pistons from the guidance pull. All parts clean and easily with fine oil moisten. The arrows indicate the sliding places. I tightened already large deposits in these places with some revisions at HIF4 carburetor. For cleaning I have metal polish distorted. (Dursol) a cleaning of the absorber chamber do not forget! After the suction curl again installed and the absorber chamber is released from the old oil liquid manure, naturally new oil must be filled into both chambers on same height, 12-13 mm over the hollow piston rod. As oil SAE 20 or 15W/40 can be filled in. The absorption oil can with a one-way syringe on their exit a thin hose as extension is put to be filled in. 2 3
CSU HIF of 4 carburetors attitude & Tuning of auxiliary tools synchronously tester CO tester the fig. 1 shows one synchronously testers of gunson with the designation of CARBALANCER. The equipment is quite favorable and fulfills its task the amount of air to both carburetors very well to seize. Through the screen in the aspirating pipe air measurers rotate the main intake air are roughly adjusted. Thus number of revolutions the full announcement can be read off from the scale measurermeasurer measurers with each. The announcement is enough from 1-5. The equipment is easy to serve and very exactly. At the company. Scrubbing flax is the tester for 25? to have.

1 Fig. A: That the measurermeasurer measurer an announcement between 1 and 5 in such a way stop amount of air at the screen on the scale indicate. Fig. B: Amount of air from the measurermeasurer measurer read off and notice. Fig. C: Read off and to the same value with the butterfly valve adjusting screw at same number of revolutions from the second carburetor adjust the amount of air. The measurement in the change so long repeat to balance same in the no-load operation to both carburetors one indicates. This procedure with 1500-3000 U/min in the lower and upper partial load range make again. This measurement is very important for an optimal achievement and force development.

A B C fig. 2 shows a guest ester (CO) that in no nut runner workshop to be missing should. The digital announcement is stopped before the measurement with the calibration button to 2% CO. The measure with the two feathers/springs is put into the exhaust. These feathers/springs fix the measure in the plant. Voltage supply for the measuring instrument (12 V) can be inferred at the vehicle or at an external battery by means of clamps. The tester at the vehicle tail set up can the measured CO value optically still on large distance be read off. That CO tester is suitable also for the mobile employment! 2

Blast connection The basic adjustment of the nozzle height takes place with all CSU carburetor types according to the same pattern. In principle the nozzle is first so highly turned with all carburetor types, which locks it above concisely with the bridge in the carburetor. Accordingly afterwards the nozzle is lowered, by means of the adjusting screw (fig. 4). To both carburetors the blast connection with the adjusting screw sitting laterally in a recess (fig. 4) against the clockwise direction upward to concise with the bridge turn. Now 1.6 mm through turn the nozzle with the adjusting screw in the clockwise direction lower. (1.6 mm = approx.. the engine in any case starts 1.5-2 revolutions) with this basic adjustment. Pay attention however please also to a correct attitude entire gas linkage and the ignition. If the engine reached then its operating temperature, the micro-adjustment can take place. Note: Blast connection still above, mixture becomes leaner. Blast connection downward, mixture becomes fatter. The attitude of the nozzle height affects itself over the entire plunger lift, from the no-load operation to the full load. 4

(fig. 5) the blast connection in its end position. 5 blast connection bridge adjusting screw vergasergestaenge basic adjustment with engine switched off both clamping screws (9) of the butterfly valve waves connection loosen. Chokekabel (10) at the compression joint solve. The clamping screws (11) solve and in this basic position on it respect at the Chokeknopf approx.. 2 mm play develop. The two screws (11) tighten. Now the connecting shaft with the two levers after operation of the Choke, which move cam discs at the same time up to the notice, should. Choke for starting the engine pull. Engine start and the idling speed with the two no-load operation screws (see legend fig. 6) roughly on approx.. 800 U/min adjust. With one synchronously testers or with the hose method both carburetors with the no-load operation screws on same intake air quantity bring and the idling speed of approx.. 800 U/min keep. Tighten the clamping screws (9) in this basic position after this final procedure. After easy pulling to gas course must now both butterfly valve waves from their basic position a rotating motion at the same time make. Fig. 7 shows the free play of the butterfly valve fork. 1.5 mm play the cold weather starting tie bar should be present between butterfly valve wave levers and! 6 7

A small gap stops high-speed no-load operation to be present between the adjusting screws (8) and the high-speed no-load operation cam is in the basic position. Chokebedienungsknopf pull out to the arrow under the adjusting screw at each carburetor, engraved on the cam, stand. With help of a balance measuring instrument the adjusting screws of both carburetors to adjust in such a way a high-speed idling speed of approx.. 1500 U/min one indicates. The same amount of air is to be sucked in also by both carburetors. Check the intake air quantity of both carburetors afterwards with idling speed. Now the mixture attitude can take place! 6 No-load operation screw No-load operation screw Mixture attitude Correct mixture attitude on the basis the engine speed with the test pin (fig. 1) at the carburetor the piston approx.. 0.8 mm easily raise. Observe the reaction of the engine speed and according to diagram (Bild2) evaluate.

Mixture to fat: The engine speed increases considerably. Correct mixture attitude: The engine speed increases only easily. Mixture to lean: The engine speed decreases immediately. The fig. 3 shows the mixture adjusting screw at a HIF4 carburetor. The point of grain (see arrow) was made after the basic adjustment of the nozzle height. In each case turn the adjusting screw to both carburetors (see fig. 3) around 1/6 revolution in the clockwise direction for fat mixture or against the clockwise direction for lean mixture around the best mixture attitude according to diagram (fig. 2) to reach. 1 2 3

Reminds me of this which used to be on the control panel an electronic telephone exchange I used to visit many years ago:

"Alles touristen und non-technishen looken peepers! Das machine is nicht fur der fingerpoken und mittengrabben. Is easy schnappen der springenwerk, blowenfusen und popencorken mit spitzen sparken. Das machine is diggen by experten only. Is nicht fur gerwerken by das dummkopfen. Das rubbernecken sightseeren keepen das cottenpiken hands in das pockets. Relaxen und watchen das blinkenlights."
