MG MGB Technical - Hood keeps popping up

Every time I hit a bump in the road my hood pops up, and it's driving me crazy! The safety catch never lets go, but the main latch does. I replaced the spring that pulls the bar close, but it's still popping open. Could it be the spring on the hood itself, or the retainer plate at the bottom of that spring?

Thanks!

Justin. How much movement is there in the hood when it is closed? The round striker with spring is adjustable and should be adjusted so that the hood will just close and latch with no extra movement. If there is movement, the hood will spring upwards and unlatch itself. Les

There was an article in Safety Fast on this recently. It was a midget with the same problem. The Owner solved it by adjusting the latch so that the bonnet was less tightly clamped, so when the car flexed on hitting a bump the movememnt was taken up by the spring and no force was transmitted to the latch.

Oops, took me a minute to understand the question - the bonnet! :-) Check the spring which moves the flat strip onto the latch pin and that the cable is free and not too tighly adjusted. Safety catch is part of MOT over here now I undestand. Rich.

Wear in the pin can cause this, sometime turning the pin by 1/4 turn brings a new facet into play and solves the problem. But check the latch on the slam panel moves freely back and fore, and all the way, when the release is operated.

Had the same problem on the Silver Lady, every bump up it sprang. Tried many things to stop it such as ensuring that the
catch moved all the way over to the round striker and spring, nothing worked until I resulted to using a hammer and a vice to bend the stiker towards the catch approx 1/8th inch. problem solved, as I said it was the last resort but it worked!
