MG MGB Technical - Horn won't work
Need help with my horn. If you short it at the horn, it works, but pushing in the horn on the steering wheel doesn't. I replaced the horn brush (which was missing), but now need some help. Thanks, Dan |

Dan, consider this-you should have power anywhere along the horn circit all the way to the horn button. The horn works by grounding the circit at the steering wheel. Check for power at each horn connection and then again in the horn button. |

Put a voltmeter on the purple/black at the horn, you should see 12v wrt ground. Push the button and it should (but won't) drop close to 0 volts. If it drops a little there is a bad connection back through the column, horn push and column ground. If it doesn't move at all there is a broken connection, probably in the purple/black back towards the horn push. In the former case try connecting a known good ground (i.e. one that sounds the horns when connected to them directly) to the purple/black at the horn push. If that doesn't sound the horns the bad connection is in the purple/black. If it does the bad connection is probably in the column ground, a known problem on rubber-bumper cars (if that is what you have). In this case the horn should sound from the horn push if you have your good ground on the column up by the steering wheel. I used a relay to boost my poor ground, others have mentioned a ground strap between rack and chassis rail. |
