MG MGB Technical - In Line fuses

69 Roadster - You know those two in-line fuses in the engine compartment that mount in small brackets on the inside of the right wing? I have noticed them on a number of cars that have pictures of the engine compartment, as well. Looking at my old harness these two fuses appeared to fuse separately the headlights and the tail lights. On my new harness (British Wiring) , I see where I can insert a fuse where the body harness joins the main harness in the engine compartment to fuse the tail lights but don't see the red that goes to the front of the car for the headlights or perhaps running lights available for fusing. How is yours set up? Hate to pull apart my new harness to yank the red or other wire out of there to put fuse in line.

My wiring diagram shows an in-line fuse for the tail lights but not one for the headlights and this seems to be at odds with the set up on my car and what I have seen on others...though perhaps they weren't fusing the headlights but something else, like the fuel pump.

JT, The fuse for the front goes to the parking lights, The one for the rear goes to tail lights and back up lights. Diagram 8 in the shop manual or the Bentley manual should be the correct wiring diagram for your car. One line fuse is shown in the diagram about 1 1/2" above the right stop/tail light and is labeled 67. The other fuse is not labeled and is a little over an inch above fuse #67. Clifton

Up to 67 the side and number plate lights weren't fused at all. In 68 and 69 there were two in-line fuses one feeding the front parking lights and the other feeding the rears and number plate (not reversing) lights. After that a 4-way fuse box was fitted (in place of the original 2-way) with the top two fuses being one for the RHS and the other for the left, i.e. the number plate lights were fused separately. The reversing lights (and brake lights) were always powered from the green circuit, 2nd fuse up in all fuseboxes. The headlights were never fused. When the USA side-markers came on with the headlights (70-early 72) they were unfused, when they came on with the parking lights (late 72 on) they were fused with them.

Thanks guys. I got back under hood last night and examined the knot of connections from the main harness to the body harness and believe I see how to do it. There are two reds coming out of the main harness into a double connector one of which is the hot wire coming from the switch and the other is the wire going to the front parking lights. Plugging into the other end of that double connector is the red wire going to the rear lights. Just need to unplug and insert my two fuses. Don't know why I got so confused about it. Just hadn't thought through it, I guess.

Paul, Of course it is the number plate lamps and not the reversing lamps. I should have looked more carefully. Thanks for keeping the old man straight. Clifton
