MG MGB Technical - is it possible
is it possible to put an mgb 5 bearing engine with overdrive gearbox in an 1964 body. i thought the gearbox tunnel is more narow on the 64 body, but is it possible to do without any bodywork or welding serge http://mg-owners-gallery.eu/ |

I believ you can do it if you use the early 3 syncro transmission and overdrive. The full syncro box is larger and required the changes in tunnel. |

As John says - you can fit the 5 bearing engine with the 3 synchro overdrive gearbox into the early cars. You need to get the right mix of gearbox input shaft/flywheel/spigot bearing/backplate but any engine can be made to fit. |

Our 66 MGB came with a 5 main bearing engine and a 3 syncro, O/D gearbox, so it isn't a matter of making it fit, just matching the input shaft of hte gearbox to the spigot bushing in the engine's crankshaft. The drive shaft will have to be replaced with one that is slightly longer than the non O/D gearbox. Cheers - Dave |

David, You try fitting a 18GD or later 5 bearing engine to a 3 synchro gearbox without changing the flywheel & backplate - that is making it fit ... |

I have a 64 B that has the 5 main engine with the full synchro gearbox (non o/d). I had the gearbox remote shortened so that the shifter comes up at the correct place on the tunnel. Will the full synchro o/d box fit in the same space as the non o/d? Will there be a shifter problem ? |
