MG MGB Technical - Licence light earthing

Hi team,

Cleaning up split bumber licence light mounts and note that earth connection is simply a metal strip that contacts the mounting assembly.

This then is to contact the mounting bracket - then the bumper support bracket - then the main bumper support on the car.

I have cleaned up and painted each piece separately and can see there will be problems establishing a proper earth without scratching off the paint in half-dozen places.

Is there a more positive method of developing an earth connection to these lights? Something like a direct wire connection from lamp fitting to car body?

Many thanks,

Joe

Joe - I will refrain from any smart alec comments about a person named Lucas working on electrics and get on with a suggestion that I have. Run a wire from the ground connection of the licence light, along with the power wire to the inside of the trunk. Once inside the trunk, run this wire to the ground connection point for the rear lights and the fuel pump, shich is under one of the mounting bolts for the rear licence plate bracket. Make sure that the surface of the metal under under this bolt head is shiny clean (as from using sand paper on it) and coated with a good conductive, anti-corrosion surface compound such as Kopr-Shield made by Thomas & Betts (P/N 201-31879). You should be able to get Kopr shield from any good electrical contractor outlet or even from Home Depot. Good luck - Dave

Had exactly the same problem when restoring my CB. I ran a ground wire from under the housing fixing screw inside the overrider.

David & Paul.....

Thanks for the insights. Hoped there was some solid fix for the potential problem.

As far as the family name, I think it was great Uncle Joseph that spent the family fortune and lost the secret formula for proper wiring in a poker game to some guy named Ford!

But then again, that leaves us with really neat challenges that make our cute little cars that much more fun.

Thanks much,
