MG MGB Technical - Manual Choke Cable for a '76 Twin HIF4 Conversion

On my '76, I have the same dash as the '72-74 model years, which have a T-handle choke cable in the upper right section of the instrument panel. On my '76 (which was originally equipped with the ZS and water-choke), this hole is basically capped. Late B manual choke conversions for the ZS are installed under the dash (I have this bracket). However, I'm now preparing to install a twin SU setup (a modified set of HIF4s, details to follow later). I would like to install the same choke handle as found in '72-'74 model years. The black cap appears to be held to the dash through some sort of fastener in the back. I'm not sure if it was meant to simply snap off, screw off, or if it needs to actually be broken off to accommodate the normal choke handle. I'm also not certain as to what additional grommet (or similar holder) might be required in its place to take it back to the '72-'74 setup.

I know we have quite a bit of collective late model B twin SU conversion experience out there. Many of you must have converted the '75 and '76 model years. Did you simply use an under-the-dash solution, OR did you find a way to remove the cover on the dash and properly install the handle? I've considered brute force, but have since thought better (a bit of patience is a good thing and I want it to look "original" [like it belongs there], even though I'm well aware that it's not).

And FWIW, this does not mean that I no longer stand by my findings with respect to the excellent modified, custom ZS setup I've successfully run now for the past 18 months...I just felt like trying something new. BTW, this has involved a fair amount of custom work, which I'll describe (with all due credit to excellent developer) after I have it all in place and tuned (a setup that will flow FAR better than the conical K&N filter solution currently employed in many of these conversions and one with some nice carb and manifold optimization). But, I'm getting off track here.

I doubt it is any big deal- just pop it out/off, even drill through it. On the choke equipped models it is just a hole in the dash. The fitting for the T handle simply passes through and is secured by a nut- a cheap, pressed sheet metal nut, in mine- although it is no joy to get a hand up in there unless you have small hands or like challenges and skinned knuckles.Get your head under there, with a small flashlight, and you will see how the plug is held on/in. Definitely not rocket science.

Yea, I've already torn up my right hand/wrist, just discovering how it's attached. I just don't want to rip the dash (it's in good shape, but it IS 26 years old). I've considered drilling a hole through the center (as it appears to have a hole in the back), but I wanted to see what others have done for this conversion, specifically on the '75 and '76 model years, as they would have had the same fitting as mine.

The plug is just that and it mushrooms out on the back side. I have removed many for manual choke conversion with a screw driver and pliers. To install the cable without blood, pull the glovebox, then the center vents, (one screw from back) install cable cut an old cheap, Craftsman etc. 3/4 wrench down short and use to tighten.
