MG MGB Technical - MG oil filter

I have bought at Beaulieu autojumble some Unipart oil filter GFE422 in Unipart box marked GFE121. I can use this filters to my 18V engine?
Regards.

From a cursory look in the Brown & Gammon part book, it appears that you have the wrong filter.

The part numbers are for:
3 Main engine ; GFE 102
5 Main engine ; GFE 114

Of course, you may try fitting your new filter in place and, if it fits and does not leak, I would guess things would be workable.

How much did the filter cost? And, what would be the cost of the proper filter? I tend not to try to get by on the cheap when it comes to engine lubrication.

Picked from a TVR-forum:
The correct part is a Unipart Filter GFE320 (long) or GFE422 (short) ... They have the flap and are readily available from Unipart or most Landy dealers.

So it appears to be an V8 oilfilter with a non-return valve?

GFE121 is a correct filter for the inverted spin-on applications -- I seem to recall GFE121 supercedes GFE114, but I could be wrong. GFE121s have the anti-drainback valves, although the last few that I bought had defective anti-drainback valve, at which point I gave up on Unipart and switched to Purolator. ;-)

BTW I think the GFE121 would have been correct for your engine, I always use it for my 73'18V.

I've been using a Motorcraft FL-300 for the inverted spin-on application.
Oil pressure comes up immediately on start up.

Thanks all for your reply. The right spares is GFE121, I have one on my GT, with anti drainback but it's not available,in France, from Unipart. The part available to Moss is registered Classic!

No great loss in my opinion. ;-) Go to your local Volvo shop an tell them you need a Mann 917 -- it fits many many Volvos from the 1970s to the 1990s so should be easy to find....

I have also inquired about the Switch from GFE 121 to GFE 422. My reputable source of MGB and other British car parts informed me that apparently UNIPART has adopted a standardization practice and have replaced the GFE 121 by the GFE422. I have installed and used a GFE422 Filter on my '78 B (18V engine) and have had no functional problems. The gasket on the filter is larger than on a GFE 121. I did encounter some difficulty when trying to unscrew the filter for removal. I suspêct the larger gasket made a stonger bond with the seat around the oil inlet pipe. As a recommendation, double-up on the grease on the rubber seal on this filter before installing.

Hope this helps.

I use Delco PF13C or Penzoil PZI-1 and the oil pressure comes up right away so I guess the valve must be working OK. These are the filters recommended for the 1980 MGB 18V by the companies who make the filters.
I forget the purolator number but can get it if anyone needs it.
