Carl - E-mail me for a write up on my last windscreen replacement (done by my wife and me and which produced a leak free wind screen). No the dash does not need to be removed and I would be very hesitant to turn the job over to a shop that has not done it before - it is totally different from any modern vehicle. I don't know how close you are to the headquarters and shop of the MG Owner's Club, but that is a place that can do the job correctly and can recommend other shops in your area that can also do it. their web site is: http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgoc/index.html Cheers - Dave |

Carl, some time ago i read an interesting report upon the windscreen change at the homepage of the Chicagoland MG Club. The report also showed a lot of pics of all the critical points of this job. The dash must not be removed from the car, you will get acess to the bolts at the A-posts of the doors (in the upper edge under the dash) and need to remove the rod in the middle of the screen, cut away the large gasket at the downside of the frame and the whole assy can be lifted from the car then, dismanteled, new seals and glass fitted and reassambled again, although i would try to find a complete windscreen (second hand) with frame and have it fitted to the car. There is a great chance to distroy the new windscreen when reassambing it's frame if there is not enough experience present at the stuff of the workshop. Hope this helps Ralph |

No the dash doesn't need to be removed, and I'd be concerned that they don't know what they are doing. having said that I'd answer any questions they may have, but otherwise leave them to do it, otherwise if there are any subsequent problems with the screen like cracking, and you have refitted the frame to the car, say, then they could deny all responsibility. This may be an issue if you have to pay an excess. If you remove the fibre-board box from the glovebox (bracket to cross-brace and screws round the edge), and the fuel gauge and overdrive switch, you can get at both bolts both sides to remove the frame from the car. On the right side an appropriately sized socket wrench and extension is wielded through the fuel gauge hole, but wrap the handle to avoid chipping the crinkle finish. From the factory the two centre bolts are longer than they need to be, and so can only be fully removed with the screen partially lifted, and you must remeber to replace them before the screen is fully seated. I say 'must', but if you forget you can cut them down a bit, remembering to leave enough length to grind a point back on, and they can be fitted afterwards.
