MG MGB Technical - Monza style fuel cap

My B didn't have a proper fuel cap when I got her. Just a horrible plastic universal thing. I wasn't able to find a cap locally but in the end managed to get an absolute bargain on a Monza style flip cap off eBay. The same seller has more here: http://cgi.ebay.com/classic-MINI-monza-fuel-filler-cap_W0QQitemZ4596000803QQcategoryZ43122QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I need to make up a new pipe for it to go down to the tank. Luckily mine is the later style with the curved flexible hose. I found you can get 57mm exhaust tube which is exactly the right size to fit the brass collar. My plan is to get a short length of that, sand off the aluminium coating from the end and solder the brass fitting ring to it.

The question is should I weld some sort of anti-syphon device into the end of the pipe. I have some perforated steel sheet at home. About 1mm thick and with 6mm holes through it. If I welded a bit of that into the end of the pipe as a sort of screen would that be likely to mess up the fuel flow when filling it?

My old GT didn't have a locking cap and had no anti-syphon at all and I never had a problem with people steaking fuel. Seems wise to be cautious though.

Oh, the car was originally US but all the emissions control has gone and she has SU HIF carbs. The cap is vented and there is just the one fuel line out of the tank through the middle of the sender unit. I'll be running a modern type fuel pump near the tank (as soon as I remember which box of parts it is hidden in) and a pressure regulator and filter up in the engine bay.

Which way were those old style caps fitted? With the lid hanging down when open seems the most obvious way.
