MG MGB Technical - My diagnostician I.Q. = my shoe size

I have a '79 B with ported head, hi-perf cam, and headers. I ran the single Zenith Stromberg for awhile (I know, you're thinking the ZS won't fit with the headers... it will but that's another story). I bought a rebuilt HIF4 setup off the internet (it wasn't) and had a local mechanic rebuild them (my carb rebuild I.Q. also = my shoe size). It ran pretty good for about a week... took it back to the mechanic... charged me more money... ran okay for awhile... now I'm low on cash... sob story...violins playing in the background.

I think I have several problems (as if this is a surprize)... to wit:

On deceleration i'm getting a popping noise in the exhaust... more pronounced as I go down hill. Gasket at the header flanges is new... should I look at where the header connects to tube that leads to muffler?

Power is awful from idle to about 3000 revs. The 79B apparently has one of the worst distributors Lucas ever made (owymoron here?). Should I replace distributor or rebuild. It already has that Crane kit.
Do I need to recurve because the motor has been changed and the smog stuff has been removed (for off road use only of course).

Am I in denial and the problen is still in the HIF4s?

Is my diagnostician I.Q. too low to own an MGB?
Scott Fife

Hi Scott,

1) What needles are you running?

2) what air filters?

3) Have you filled the dashpots with 20/50 engine oil?

I mention the oil as the engine will run badly below 3000 rpm under acceleration if the oil is low....no fuel enrichment.

4)Are the points and condenser ok?

5)Are the plugs good?

Any other symptoms?
