MG MGB Technical - New soleniod with old plunger
I just replaced the overdrive solenoid on my 67 D Type overdrive with a new one from Moss(made in Taiwan)and used the old plunger. The instructions say to only install the new solenoid with the new plunger. The solenoid is easy; to replace the plunger would require lowering the back of the transmission and then some work. I checked the current draw and it's 12 amps when switched on and drops to less that 2 amps after a split second and holds. It seems to be working OK. Has anyone else used the old plunger and has it worked. Andy 67 Raodster 74 GT |

I would imagine the potential problems could be down to tolerances - one plunger may be too big for another solenoid body and so not fit, or possibly be too lose which might cause other problems. Quite likely to have differences in size after 30-odd years and a copy component, I would have thought. This shouldn't affect the current drawn, so as long as it works reliably in practice you should be fine. |

Paul thanks for your input. You are quite right, and it works fine. I drove over 150 miles on the weekend in overdrive without a problem. Perhaps I'm just lucky and everything fit fine. Andy |
