MG MGB Technical - New SU Costs

Anyone know the delivered cost for new pair of AUD 135's from Burlen delivered to Boston area?

Seems like they're much cheaper that way than Moss as the UK web site shows 242GPB for the pair. Approx. 366USD plus shipping. Moss wants like 630USD.

Robert - Burlen Fuel System's shipping charges is £6 for orders up to £50 and £15 for orders over £50. just add the appropriate shipping fee to the cost of the item and plug the resulting price in the appropriate box at this web site http://www.xe.net/currency/ for the cost in USD. If you are going to use a credit card (easiest way to order from them) add about 3% to cover the conversion fee that most credit card companies charge. Since you can import somewhere around $900 USD worth of goods without having to pay any duty, there should not be a customs charge. Cheers - Dave

Thanks David,
When you run the costs including shipping, new is very competitive with quality rebuilds. I am aware that these aren't 100% the same as the old but most of the reviews are positive. I believe they all have biased needles and the newer floats with no adjustment except washers.

More questions sorry,

1. Would you order viton tipped needle valves? I have old Grouse jets that work fine that could be transferred.

2. Also the cost to go to the carbs with the crankcase vents is about the same. Would you go with that and get rid of the Smiths PVC? I'm not a stickler for originality. Seems like the later design would work better.

3. I'm in no hurry but how long does this usually take?

4. Why do Moss et all justify their high markup?

5. Do you order on the website or via e-mail? I've heard e-mail can be slow.

Robert - 1. If the old Grouse jets are still good, I would stick with them.

2. I don't have any feel for this issue.

3 & 5. Ordering on their web site, I generally get the order within no more than 10 days.

4. I don't know why the mark up is so high, they get a trade discount on all the parts they order from BFS, just like I do on fuel pump parts. I also don't understand the higher price for a positive ground pump vs a negative ground pump of the exact same type, when BSF's price for the two is the same - one of the mysteries of like I guess. I would stick with the Smiths PCV system since it is a tried and true design. The probable cause for the positive earth pump's higher price is that they don't sell as many and the cost of stocking them is an added burden. I bought a pair from VB several years ago and they cost much less than Moss. RAY

Robert, I had the viton tipped jets installed on my MGA Su's, and had lots of problems..it appears as if some of the modern fuels (at least here in Oz) make the tips swell, and the jet sticks. I went back to a new set of Grouse, and no problems thereafter.

I would definitely recommend getting rid of the PCV if you are happy to fit vented carbs. It is a troublesome piece of kit that MG themselves only used for 4 years (64 to 68). Unlike the PCV valve the carb system has no moving parts to jam or diaphragm to split. You will need a Y-pipe and a long and short length of hose to reach the carbs.

Don't use Grouse jets, the feathers block the carb, and then you will be grousing.

You say the opposite of what I have read a number of times lately, Gary, which is while the original Grose jets (jets?) were better than the brass float valves (although I have never had any problem with them) the Viton tipped were an improvement whilst at the same time new-stock Grose jets caused problems. But at the end of the day if what you have works, then stick with it.
