MG MGB Technical - NOS (nitrous oxide)

i am a midget owner who has just brought my first MGBGT and being in my 20's i want the car to have a bit more ooommmmppphhhh but whithout an engine transplant at the moment i am currently considering NOS or nitrous oxide for the standard lump i have not seen this before on a bgt only on a midget my mates. i am told i need to get harder half shafts and that is about it does anyone know if this has been done before on a standard block

I very much doubt you'll break your rear axle... certainly not if you're not changing the tyres. They give up before the axle or gearbox, in terms of torque.

Not sure how your head gasket will like it though. Let me know, I'd like to gas my B.

What year is your car?

There are a few important factors, NOS does not blow engines improper use or worn engines blow them. I am not a NOS expert, but have kept my ears open when V8 people are discussing the issue as a possibility for my conversion long term.

1. Make sure your motor is in good shape. Not excessiveley worn, burning oil, etc..

2. Make sure your CR is not overly high, NOS will naturally increase CR a little and works better with lower compression motors.

3. Make SURE you get a WET NOS kit. there are dry which add no additional fuel and wet which have a fuel jet to richen mixture. NOS by itself produces a lean condition, in a dry kit you have to force the motor rich acrost all throttle settings to keep from goin lean and destroying the motor. a Wet kit contains NOS and fuel systems and automatically introduces more fuel to keep the mixture balanced. You can run rich all day, lean just once..

4. Use safety switches. There are a bunch of safety triggers available. 3 I consider manditory. WOT (wide open throttle) switch, it will only trigger NOS at WOT, Hobbs switch for fuel (only triggers NOS if acceptable fuel pressure, keeps from low fuel pressure making car run lean.) and pressure switch for NOS (again making sure sufficient pressure in system.) Do NOT use the "Fast and Foolish" style of wheel trigger system, they are not safe, and you only want NOS running at max acceleration. all the pro's use a dash switch coupled with the 3 I list abaove, that will save your motor in the long run.

5. Make sure you run a reasonable shot size. Don't try and run a 200shot on a 4cyl B. I cannot tell you the exact limit of shot size, but I would think a 50shot would be more than enough to give you a kit in the pants.. Anything more and you are asking for trouble unless you have a power buit motor with forged internals etc..

Hope that helps,

the car is a 74 BGT at the moment the car is having a full re-build in cluding the engine and gear box i have stated to my Re-conditioners that i am considering NOS they have stated a performece cam and hardened Grears as well as hardnened Half shafts.

the Block is the standrad 1800cc and the kit which i have been looking at is specfic to classic cars and will produce 50-100 bhp to the engine when enganged

i have also decided to lower the car and fit wider wheels to aid in the grip and handling as this was done on my mates Midget which at present date will out run most cars without its NOS enganed

Your axle should be fine. I know a Bunch of fellow V8 guys running stock MGB axles.

Since your friend has NOS I am sure you are aware you will have to get a Fogger style kit, or maybe a used EFI kit and remove the foggers form it.. Best of luck and let us know how it turns out.

The problem is in the saimiese ports you only need two foggers not 4, so you have a bunch of exrta stuff kicking around if your getting the engine rebuild why not make it a 1950cc with HC pistons and get your head ported and polished thats a good gain in HP right there at all RPMS at all times.

"NOS does not blow engines improper use or worn engines blow them"

It sounds to me that the mear fact you don't want to do an engine transplant is because you have a worn engine. Now, i've never done it myself, but I would speculate that, because you have a worn engine, you're probably going to be forced into an engine transplant if you go this route. Just my opinion.
