MG MGB Technical - OD Gearbox Main Bearing

Moss is asking £150 for centre bearing on a four synchro OD gearbox. Does anybody know why it is so expensive? Are there any cheaper UK sources? Or does anybody know the bearing code (or dimensions), usually stamped on the face on the bearing?

Thanks,

Neil

If it is Moss # 127-850 the price in Moss USA is $119.95 for bearing mainshaft overdrive. #127-840 ball bearing center standard trans is $19.95 and #127841 Roller bearing mainshaft center standard is $110.95.

Hi Neil:

I seem to remember several years ago that the OEM supplier destroyed/scrapped the tooling; so goes the price for what's left in the supply chain. Best bet is to find a decent used gearbox and remove the bearing assembly. This bearing (double roller) is very robust & over-designed for this application, so using a decent second hand bearing carries little risk.

I also recall that John Esposito told me that this bearing usually doesn't fail.

Thanks Guys.

And thanks for the offer Colin.

I don't know if the bearing in my box is okay, and I've just bought a spare box for parts. My gearbox is whining on the overrun, and as (i) it is probably original, (ii) it gets some abuse and (iii) the clutch is going soft, then I was going to rebuild the spare one over the winter in preparation for the inevitable!

May not be a bearing at all, but I was thinking that any rebuild ought to include new bearings, but £150 is silly money. I was thinking that if I could get hold of the original drawings/specifications (probably hopeless to think that MG used a standard bearing of some sort) I could talk to some manufacturers about making a batch at a more sensible price...
