MG MGB Technical - oil filters
I saw some talk on oil filters on the x flow head thread and thought this may be of interest, its from the mgclub.org site I always used the bigger filter on my 78B but it looks like that may not be a good idea in light of this info. I wounder if the stub pipe should be lengthened to compensate? TECH TIPS Oil Filters Here's a tip from Mister SU: Master mechanic Joe Curto would like to pass on the following very useful information to our members. To all owners of MGs who have oil filters that spin on from the top. This includes all late model MGBs and those like myself who have converted over to this much more convenient installation. The standpipe that goes up through the middle of the oil filter is approximately 3" high. Many enthusiasts have long believed that if you use a 5" or 6" high oil filter, you will have almost twice the filtration. The truth is that if a high oil filter is used, every time the engine is turned off the oil in the filter will drain down to the top of the standpipe. This will leave the top two or three inches of the filter empty. This means that every time you start your engine, the filter has to fill up again before the engine gets any oil. This is the same as starting your car for the first time after you have changed the oil and filter. For the first 10, 20 or 30 seconds, the engine has no oil pressure. Therefore, only short oil filters should be used. |

I had wondered about lengthening the pipe too. It is a common practice on jeeps to lengthen the pipe and run a V8 filter, but I haven't heard of anybody doing it to an MG , yet ... |

Can someone recommend the proper filter to use on the "upside down" application? Better yet, what is this kit I hear about that converts to "rightside up"? |

Gentleman; The WIX 51521/1521 filter is the correct one for Bs. Do not use the one WIX/NAPA call for as it is two long. Bob Thompson |

What about the Motorcraft FL-1A filter? Is this one of those that is too high and will drain halfway? Doesn't the oil pressure gauge indicate that you are getting no oil pressure in those first 10-20-30 seconds? |

Ian, I've always used Crossland #GFE 121, now stamped #529 (and painted dark blue) for my wife's 1974 MGB/GT with no oil related failures in (90K miles). Touch wood! Regards, L.C. |

The best oilfilters for the MGB are: Mann W917 Motorcraft FL300 Purolator Pure One 10017 K&N Performance Gold HP2004 I like the K&N because the hexagonal boss on top of the filter makes it a snap to remove and it filters out particles as fine as the Purolator will. Costs more, but worth it! |

Mandatory reading! http://www.frankhunt.com/FRANK/corvette/articles/oilfilterstudy/oilfilterstudy.html All you ever wanted to know about oil filters. Which ones are good, which ones are crap! |

The Mann W917 is the same application as a Purolator PureOne PL14670, i.e. nearly all Volvos from the late 80s and early 90s. It's about the same height as the GFE121 and probably twice the diameter & thus lots more filtration area. The study cited above convinced me that the PureOne was the way to go. It's _definitely_ worth a read.... |

I laud Russ Knize for going through the effort of analyzing oil filters and sharing his study with the www, BUT, his conclusions are based and limited to filter materials and construction; and he supposes a lot. He never scientifically analyzes which filters do the best job of filtering dirty oil into clean oil. But for the guy who want really clean oil check out this site. While this filter takes out the particulates, it doesn't change the acidity level of aging oil. So, one must still change the oil and filter and a regular basis. http://trasko-usa.com/ |

Interesting. They state: "IT'S LIKE HAVING AN OIL REFINERY UNDER YOU HOOD!". They imply (note that they don't state, just imply) that you can go 10,000 miles between oil canges. Do they also sell those special pills that enable you to fill your fuel tank with water, drop in the pills, and the water turns into gasolene? |

I bet they have a website for selling the Golden Gate Bridge, too! Trashko? |

Hi, i own a 80B and my maintenance don't recomend any type of FRAM filter. I do believe the proper filter has a valve in it to prevent oil drainback when the engine is shut down. . I use Delco |
