MG MGB Technical - Oil leak at right angle speedo drive
I've developed quite a sizeable oil leak from the speedo right angle drive on my 67 B. It started after I removed the engine and gearbox to replace the rear main seal. I checked that I have the correct copper washer between the right angle drive and the tailshaft output and I have added a copper washer as well at the speedo cable connection. All connections are tight. There are no leaks from the tailshaft oil seal only around the right angle drive. Any suggestions Andy |

The leak is most likely caused by a bad seal in the speedometer pinion. The seal is easy on a non overdrive car; while, the overdrive speedo pinion has a very small pin to stop the bearing from rotating. Removal of the pin can be easy or a nightmare. Note that the speedo seal is different between non o/d & o/d. Rich Boris 67 MGB |

Rich thanks for your reply and help. I think you're right that it must be the speedo pinion seal, that makes sense. I've had the engine and O/D gearbox out a couple of times over the last 4 months and while it was out it would have been simpler. I'll see if it's easier if I remove the rear trans mount which is easy to remove and very hard to reinstall. Thanks Andy |
