MG MGB Technical - oil on the brak,e shoes

I have a 78b, and was checking the back brakes out. The left was good, plenty of shoe left. When I pulled the right drum off, it was packed with grease and dirt, creating a thick pack. the drum was all wet, and the shoes were soft and mushy. What could it be? Axle shaft seal or brake cylinder There were no symtoms of being the brakes. Can anyone help me with this one? Thanks
Phil Chamberlain

Phil. If you have not needed to add brake fluid recently I would
think your problem is a bad axle shaft seal. Clifton

Phil, Taste it! Brake fluid has a very distinctive flavour (at least the standard stuff does, don't know about silicone). Compare it with the stuff in the tin. Just a touch mind, it's not gourmet stuff.

Does everything tast better on a Ritz?

Sounds kind of dangerous to tase the stuff.

No need to taste it, just smell it. The sulfur compounds in gear oil (80/90 should be in the rear axle)makes it smell pretty bad. I suspect that's the case if as Clifton points out, you haven't needed brake fluid in a while.

It goes without saying that you are going to replace the shoes and not attempt to clean them, right?
Steve Mc

I'd replace the seal, the shoes and the cyl and be done with it. If the cyl isn't leaking it's getting ready to. There cheap and easy to change. And all parts are on sale right now! Bob
