MG MGB Technical - overdrive noise ??
I have a 72 GT, all is fine except a strange ticking noise on deceleration which only occurs in overdrive, as far as I can see nothing is touching anywhere and the overdrive seems to function correctly. There is no noise on acceleration - I have rummaged through the archive and not found anything - any ideas what to look for ??? Thanks Chris |

Has this recently started happening in your ownership or always done it? If the latter then to be honest if everything is working as it should I'd ignore it. I know I advocate listening to your car and doing something about changes in how it sounds, feels and smells before something breaks, but in this case you are probably looking at removing the engine and gearbox and dismantling the OD without any specific thing to look for or replace. One thing it *could* be is the one way clutch, which consists of a set of rollers that jam to make the two halves of the clutch rotate as one in a non-OD forward gear, but in OD one half rotates freely relative to the other. It *could* be damage to some of the rollers, which can be caused by OD being engaged in reverse. As long as this doesn't happen again that defect probably wouldn't get any worse. Make sure your gearbox lockout switch is functioning properly. If it gets worse, or other things start changing with the operation of the OD, you may need to consult a rebuilder. My V8 makes different noises in OD compared to without whereas my roadster doesn't. But the V8 has been like that for 13 years and 75k miles, and is consistent, so I'm not concerned. |

It's been doing if for a year or so with no noticable effect, as you say I might as well wait until something serious happens or I need to take the engine out !! Thanks Chris |
