MG MGB Technical - overdrive oil seal
The rear oil seal on the overdrive on my 1972 MGBGT ( 4 seed syncro) is leaking, can I renew it in situ. if so how can I lock the shaft to undu the flange nut to the prop shaft? Wil Wilkinson |

Yes, a length of angle with two holes for bolts on one side of the flange, cut-away to allow space for the socket on the nut if required, will hold the flange while removing/replacing the nut (55-60 ft lb, I believe). Not sure if oil will run out or not, probably if the front is raised, maybe not if the rear is raised. Then it is a case of hooking the seal out. Check the flange shaft isn't grooved, if it is you may be able to get away by fitting the new seal at a different depth in the casing. I think I remember seeing somewhere it will recess into the casing, but should actually be flush. |

Hi Wil, Further to Paul's comment, if the flange shaft is grooved it can easily be fixed with a special stainless steel sleeve. These are designed to be fitted over the shaft and provide a smooth surface for the oil seal. I have used them and they are quite easy to fit with a vice. They are available from bearing shops, at least here in Oz. Take your flange shaft with you so that the correct size can be supplied. Herb |
