MG MGB Technical - Please recommend best type of brake pads ...

Please recommend the highest-performance brake pads to use on the road. green stuff? Mintex? ... and should I also ask for matching shoes for the rear drums?
Dan

Dan-
Yes, it's best to have both the front brake pads and the rear brake shoes shod with the same material. Original Equipment material is an organic compound and has a friction coefficient of 0.32. Carbon Metallic material has a friction coeffecient of 0.36, which is too small an increase to make them worth the extra cost, although they are more heat resistant. Semiorganic/semimetallic has a coefficient of 0.48, a fifty percent improvement over the OE material and are heat resistant up to F700. The very best is Carbon Kevlar, which has an equivalent coefficient of friction to that of the semiorganic/semimetallic, but are heat resistant up to F1,050. Expensive, yes, but you asked for the highest-performance items, so there it is. Carbon Kevlar brakes (Pads: Part# CKPMGA/B, Shoes: Part# CKSMGA/B) are available from TSI Automotive at http://www.tsimportedautomotive.com/

DO NOT USE kevlar pads for street use. They take way to long to come up to opererating temp and untill then your brakes will not stop you too well. I recomend metal master pads or green stuff for street use.
Ross

Ross-
Sorry, but you're wrong on this one. I use them on the street and they're fine, requiring no warm-up period. I Emailed Ted Schumacher at TSI Automotive and heres a Copy-and-Paste of what he had to say on the subject:

we supply kevlar and carbon kevlar, depending on the application. either one has good cold stop characteristics - no warm up needed. we sell these for all applicaitons from bugeye sprite tomy dually pick-up
and antique cars. please let me know if we can help. they are listed on our website. just select performance parts then click on the car in question. thanks, ted

Interesting discussion. How kind are the various materials to your disk? I imagine that there is always a pay-back in terms of the greater the friction, the more damage to the disk. Is this correct?
Marc

I have been running Kevlar greenstuff pads for 2 years on my V8 and they are great from cold and have not worn the discs more than usual - and with discs costing about the same as the pads, who cares?
Chris Betson

Hiya

My V8 did 200 miles round Donnington in February as a charity drive taking passengers round the track....thats how long the standard V8 pads lasted ( MGB calipers and discs with V8 pads)....the discs and calipers wore out too!!!! The standard material pads are fine for road use and the sprints and hillclimbs where instant brakes are required...however...for track test days ( and similar road use? we used 25 gallons of petrol to do the 200 miles!!!! ) we would use very much uprated pads from now on!!! I will post some pics of what was left of my pads on my website at a later date....you can all tease me then for not thinking of the hard work the brakes were going to endure!!!

We all know how much thought you put into the "go" part of it...

Marc-
Sons #3 and #4 elected to put Semiorganic/Semimetallic brakes on their B's and thus far they've been very kind to the rotors. Not much brake dust, either. If you're interested in this material just click on this: http://www.carbotecheng.com/ Note: stay away from the 913 material for street applications. It is very dusty and noisy when cold (Screeeeech). We chose the Super Street F (7266) material instead. It has a Friction Coefficient of 0.45mu. I hope that you've got good tires!

I ran kevlar pads on my eclipse and they were really bad cold. But that was 5 years ago. I am wrong about those pads. I think its pure kevlar pads that are for racing only.
