MG MGB Technical - Proudly presenting... the MGB GTS!

Good afternoon all,

After over a year of near-silence from me on this BBS, I can finally reveal to you all the reason for my absence. After 13 months' work, today I drove my Rover T16 Turbo powered 1967 GT out of the garage!

http://www.biryani.demon.co.uk/misc/me_and_gts.jpg

It's still not streetable (the bonnet doesn't shut) but the clutch works, the brakes felt servicable (a surprise considering the length of time it's been sitting) and it makes a fantastic noise when you blip it - there's still no silencer and no air filter and the turbo inlet is in the passenger foot well!

Vital statistics:

- Rover T16, 1996 cc. Iron block, alloy 16 valve twin cam head.
- Garrett T25 turbo, modulated boost up to 12psi which will give 197ps @ 6700rpm and peak torque of 185 lbs/ft from 2100rpm all the way to the redline.
- 4-synchro MGB 'box, Helix/AP Racing clutch, everything else as you would expect for a '67 B-series car.

Tadaa :o)

Olly. Congratulations on the work. The car looks good in the photo. It would be nice if you could post this information to your website and update it as you learn more. Sounds like an interesting experiment and I am sure others would like to know how it works out. Les

Hi Olly

It should move quite well, will you be taking it to any shows ?.

Don

Congrats! Looks like a fun project. :)
Steve Simmons

Thanks for the kind words :o)

Les, I'll certainly be documenting it all on the website when I have time - the work on the car took preference over writing it all up though so there's no mention of it on there yet!

It'll definitely be going to any relevant shows, if only to be parked in the car park. The exterior finish of the car lets it down a bit (rusty wheelarches still!) but I don't mind as it makes it more of a sleeper. Only external hint as to its non-standard status is the 2.5" exhaust poking out the back...

Cheers,

That paint job , a sleeper ? I look forward to you presenting a attention seeking car. Please keep us updated , this is a great idea .

Just wondering - what is the "radiator" in front of the radiator? Is it an oil cooler? A/C condenser? A bigger radiator?
Also, showing my lack of knowledge when it comes to Rover engines, is this a four or six cylinder?
Since I am asking questions, I am also wondering what the silver/chrome tube is beside the radiator on the right side in the picture?
Keep us posted on your work. Looks good.
PS. I have lots of jeans that look just like Olly's!!!!
Robert Browning

My guess is it's an intercooler.

Very well done Olly!!!
Are you coming to Silverstone btw? Might be nice to have a beer, might be nice to chat a bit.

Keep up the good work.

Alex
Alexander M

Alexander has it quite right, it's an air-to-air intercooler to cool the hot compressed air from the turbocharger. The shiny (stainless steel) pipe to the right is the pipe from the turbo.

It's an inline four, in fact it's a derivative of the B series! Same stroke, same bearing sizes, in fact if you put the two cranks side by side you might struggle to tell them apart! This makes me feel that the car is what MG would have wanted to make if the B had lasted until the 90s.

What / when is the silverstone event? If there's a big MG meet on then it would be nice to go.

Cheers,

Olly,

It's a weekend event, possibly the largest MG event around: http://www.mgcars.org.uk/news/news915.html and http://www.mgcars.org.uk/carclub/silverstone.html
23-25 July, large auto jumble, displays of special MGs, lots of races, lots of parties at the camping too ;-)
We're going camping with a group of MGCC Belgium.

nice job! im glad to see another young guy here, im not the only one!! im well impressed with the engine conversion work, must have taken some skill to do all that. nice one!
Joe Connor

Looks great I've been thinking about this engine transplant myself would be great to have full details once you are done - Was the donor an 800 or 600 or are the ancilliaries the same anyway?

Vic
V Todman

'lo,

the Silverstone event looks like a good one, I'll have to see what I'm up to that weekend.

Full details? Let's just say that I'm not rushing to make it easy for anyone to make another one, I like having the only T16 turbo BGT in the world :o) Hints are available, but all those carefully engineered solutions are remaining top secret <g>

Thanks for the support all!

i've looked at your site, i have to ask, where do you get the time to build cars, make tea coseys, buy 200 monkeys, play music, and a lot of other things??!! you have a very extraordinary website!

i like it....
J P Connor

Olly

I knew you couldn't really 'disappear'but thought music may have taken over for a while!

Perhaps the new car will be music when you first drive it!

Well done

Oliver,

Great result and good to hear from you again. Looking forward to updates as you put it on the road.

PS Your jeans look like mine did after my clutch change etc. Fun on a garage floor, isn't it!

If only we could get the "been under the car" look into fashion. I would save a lot of money on laundry detergent.
Steve Simmons

Steve, more savings can be made if you prefer a slightly untidy hairstyle; concrete dust from the garage floor mixed with engine oil is a wonderful styling product, and the sump of a B is a perfect applicator!

J P, I have no idea where my time comes from, or where it goes either! I just plod along and as luck would have it, some projects do seem to get at least mostly finished. There are many more that have fallen by the way though!

Today I have been mostly fiddling with my wiring harness - there's lots of wires on these modern engines, you know :o) Getting it tidy is a right nightmare.

Oliver Stephenson

Olly,
Congrats on such a unique and cool MGB! Looks like very nice work, and the best part is the very pleased look on your face!! :-) You have been mighty busy, we can see, and I for one am glad you are so pleased with it yourself. Now go drive the hell out of it and enjoy! It will be a source of pleasure for years to come ;-)
Bob Muenchausen

Took it out on the road this evening... turbo set as low as it will go, shifting up at what felt like 4k but was probably less due to no tach yet...

Flippin' 'eck it felt quick! I can't wait 'til I've got a bit more testing done and the tach working so I can start really winding it up :o)

Bob, you think there's a pleased look on my face in the pic above... you should've seen me when the turbo spooled up! I'm still grinning!

Cheers,

Olly,
Are you going to mange to bring it to Silverstone? Would begood o see it in the flesh so to speak.
TJ
T J Nicolson

TJ, I'm not sure whether or not I'm free that weekend, but if I am I'd certainly like to take it.

Presumably it would just be a case of putting it in the car park with all the other MGs? Unless anyone here's running a display inside the event itself...
