MG MGB Technical - rear end or brakes grabbing
Have 1974 MGB (chrome bumper). Rear brakes seemed to be 'grabbing' last year, so put it away for winter early. First thing this spring, replaced rear wheel brake cylinders and also master brake cylinder. Still notice the 'dull thunk' when I apply brakes at very low speeds, though not as severe as last year. Could rear end/axle be at fault????? |

Do you have wire wheels? If so, it could be worn splines, especially if heard in both forward and reverse. Other possibilities include loose rear shock links, axle U-bolts, and other things that make contact in reaction to the brakes stopping the wheels, but the rest of the car keeps moving until whatever clearance is taken up. |

Larry- In addition to the possibilities that Andrew mentioned, there is the additional possibility that one of your pistons in the rear brake slave cylinders is binding. If this is the case, the piston in question will stick in its bore until the pressure in the brake circuit builds up until overcomes its resistance and causes it to shoot out, much like a bullet. Hence, the "dull thunk" that you hear. The fact that they were "grabbing" last year before you put the car away for the winter would seem to be the apparent tip-off. Worn wire wheel splines usually sound more like a "Krump" than like a "Dull Thunk". If you've got wire wheels, check 'em anyway. Better safe than sorry. |
