MG MGB Technical - Removing rear shock absorber

I'm replacing the rear shock absorbers on my 66 B. One side has come off ok but not on the other side.

The bolts all undo ok but the shock absorber arm on the link bar just will not come off. I have tried a puller but it seems to be also pulling the rubbers from the link arm!! I thought of removing the link arm attachment plate and taking the whole thing to the workbench but can't undo those nuts ... I thought I had a complete set of spanners but not for those ... anyone know the size?

Any suggestions as to how to get it the shock absorber off?

Thanks,
Colin

Colin,
I had the same problem when taking off leaf springs and cleaning/checking shocks. I ended up taking the mounting plate off there at the spring/axle mount. I was taking the spring/axle mount off anyways, so wasn't extra work for me. Once I got it to a bench, I was able to loosen all bolts with rust buster so next time they should cooperate :-)

Best regards,

Doug,

What size spanner do you need to remove the bolts off the mounting plate? None of mine fit!

Thanks,
Colin

I'd slober a bunch of antiseize on it too as the oil will be displaced.

I have used a threaded screw type tie rod separator. Be sure to have a nut on the end of the bolt on the link to avoid damage to the threads on the bolt. Dave.

If you have the Moss parts catalogue you can lookup the part number for the bolt. Then in the back of the catalogue it lists the part numbers for the fixings along with the sizes and someimes lists the spanner size required.

I use a pair of narrow-nosed Vise-Grips to
keep a stubborn shock link stud (at the spring
plate) from rotating while wrenching the nut.
