Don-
If your transmission is equipped with an overdrive unit, do not use a detergent oil as it will foam and cause cone clutch chatter, thus reducing the cone clutch lining life and interfering with the function of the Overdrive unit. Note that both the transmission and the Overdrive unit share engine oil of the same grade as for the engine, e.g., 20W/50. Your 4-synchro transmission takes 7 US pints (5.25 Imperial pints / 3 liters), and the 4-synchro transmission with Overdrive unit takes 7 US pints (6 Imperial pints / 3.4 liters). Be aware that these quantities are for clean and dry transmissions. A drain and a refill can be expected to take a little less than that as some of the old oil is bound to be left behind.

Engine oil of whatever grade is correct for your engine as has been said, but you ask what will happen if you use 'rear end' oil. The viscosity of 80/90w *gear* oil is very similar to 20W/50, V8s always had gear oil in the gearboxes and ODs anyway, and it has never caused me a problem even when well below freezing. However 'rear end' oil i.e. differential oil is slightly different to gear oil so should not be used.
