MG MGB Technical - Securon Inertia Belts

I am installing 3 point inertia seat belts in my 1971 mgb roadster. When I install the reel on the wheel well, I will use a Z bracket, as specified in the instructions. Can anyone explain how to properly install the reel? Does the Z bracket get bolted to the wheel well so that it does not move? Does the reel then got bolted to the Z bracket so that it swivels on the bracket, or is it bolted tight to the bracket? If tight, is it bolted straight uip and down, or at an angle? I know you can adjust the reel so that the reel will wind and unwind at various angles, but I am not sure whether to bolt it tight or not to the bracket. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Curt

I fitted Securon belts a long while ago but didn't use a Z bracket, from what I remember the reel bolted directly to the wheel arch, also it was quite critical to get the angle of the reel spot on or it locked up, maybe they've changed the design, it was probably about 10 years or so ago.

I've done this on my 72 roadster. Bolt the reel directly to the inner wheel arch and throw away the z bracket. The reel will lie at a slight angle but as long as you point the arrow vertically when the car is on level ground you'll be OK. On these models however the rear upper fixed point should be on the tonneau, certainly on UK cars. I have a feeling that US cars had inertia belts prior to UK fitment but tonneau mounting is awkward as you have to remove them before the tonneau cover can be fitted or removed. On the wheel well it restricts the width for hood stowage and when the tonneau cover is folded to become a half tonneau it makes it very difficult to pull the belts out. Normally they will not then retract and between this and having to tip the seats to position the tunnel release its pretty unsatisfactory. Anyone out there with a better idea and I think we'd be very pleased to hear about it.

The GT fitment is very easy and works well.

I put a pair of the Securon belts in a couple of years ago, with reels mounted on the wheel arch, and they work well. Work fine with the tonneau, but my tonneau has the zips to accommodate the seat belts, so it's not difficult to use them with the top down.

The position of the stems (where belt end snaps into) on the tunnel hasn't been a problem for me. As long as you do have a "stem" (stiff plastic sheath, as opposed to "loose" belt end), it's easy enough to find.

Curt, I emailed you some photos showing where I mounted my reels, with arrows showing distance.

Curt - I installed these on my '74 recently. The passenger side I was able to mount directly (as the reel was pointed up). On the drivers side I used the straight flat bar to extend the reel forward a little so that it was at a better angle. W/O the bracket the reel interfered with the inner fender unless it was pointed up further than I wanted it to be.

Securon does respond to email for help. They also sent me some more 3/4" bolts (very promptly I might add).

Good Luck
