MG MGB Technical - Spare wheel clamp for LE alloys

Hi,

Does anyone know what type of spare wheel clamp would be suitable for the LE alloy wheel? The standard rostyle clamp doesn't have enough length to reach the thread in the boot floor (because of the hub height of the LE alloy. Is the wire wheel clamp longer (and therefore suitable?) or was a unique part used for the LE (surely not...?)

Many thanks

easy job to lengthen the Rostyle clamp. But I always turn the wheels over and make a short clamp, that way you can use the wheel to store stuff in!
Allan Reeling

The wire wheel hold down bolt is about 1 1/2" longer and should suit your purpose. RAY

The V8 clamp is short and the wheel is mounted upside down I found a oil drain pan that fit inside the wheel and I store small spares in it. Jack is aluminum from a early Mazda RX7

what clever boys we are. I use a Honda 4 lug space saver "hard spare" to get me home, then fix and refit the LE. In 41 years of MGB ownership, and 13 with a 79 LE, I've never had a flat tire. I once read here about guys who carry "Fix a Flat" and no spare. Smarter than the average bear, eh? Vic

In 40 years, I've only had one flat and that was on the way to a friend's wedding using wedding cars tonbridge. Of course, my hydraulic jack decided to fail just then and it was snowing/sleeting at the time. RAY

I have just recently bought an 'ELECTRIC' hydraulic scissor jack. Sold for use with 4 wheel drive vehicles, and has the capacity to lift 2000 Kilos! Great, I think and saves a lot of wrist winding at the road side. Plugs into the cigarette lighter socket ( which is non-existant on my GT, was there ever a cig lighter? )anyway, I have rigged a 12 v outlet in the boot. And a transformer in my garage at the wall socket so that it can be usd in the garage without draining the car battery. But the spare wheel tie down ideas look great, my minilite look-alikes might tie down well now. Mike

Electric and hydraulic and scissors? If it's a scissors doesn't the motor turn the screw to move the scissors directly?

For years I have carried a can of Tyre Weld, but I read somewhere that it is unsuitable for inner tubed tyres-which mine are. Is this the case and why?
Michael Beswick

Scouting round it seems rather than a case of 'not suitable' it is one of 'not so effective'. This maybe due to the thinness of the inner tube rubber moving a bit inside the tyre, but apparently it can end up bonding itself to the tyre :o)

As I have wire wheels, I carry a spare wheel and spare inner tube. Provided the tyre weld gets me to somewhere I can change the wheel, that's fine! Thanks!
Michael Beswick

The only time I have ever had a flat tyre was the only time I had removed the spare to make more space in the trunk. Such is life...
