MG MGB Technical - Spitfire OD in MGB?

Greetings; I have access to a Transmission w/OD from a 74 spitfire and was wondering if it will mate to an 1800 MG engine? Just curious. Thanks.
Patrick Keenan

No - wrong gearbox and wrong OD unit!

Don't these work for 1500cc midgets? If so may be worth putting on their board
Stan Best

Patrick,
Yes and no. They were fitted behind the 1800 motor in the marinas, so with a marina bellhousing, flywheel and so on, yes with a little gearbox tunnel manipulation. For installation into your MGB, no for a number of reasons. Also, they are a weak gearbox that gives plenty of problems. Let someone with the 1500 midget who want the hassle use it. For your B, you will be time and money ahead to mount a B overdrive in the car properly.

-BMC.
BMC Brian McCullough

Ok, thanks for the response. I wanted to make sure I did not let it go and find out later it was interchangeable.
Keenan

I agree AND disagree with BMC yes he is correct in that the Spit gear box will not fit easly in a B but anything is possable with a fat deep wallet and to the point about fitting in the Midget but it not being a strong gear box I disagree I have transplanted a number of Spit OD boxes into Midgets in the past and have never had a issue with any of the boxes granted I don't just drop them in, I clean them up both outside and in by flushing them out and generally replacing anything that is needed but I view this as proventitive maintaince and why someone would go to the trouble to change out a non-overdrive unless the price was right and the individual knew for sure the box was fine becouse the boxes are the same and it is generally cheeper just to rebuild than to purchase another
Jeremiah Randolph

Not necessarily a weak gearbox but just never intended to transmit the torque produced by an 1800cc motor. Don't go there or you will be disappointed.
