MG MGB Technical - SU Fuel Pump Banjo Bolts and Fittings

Hi Guys

I am a New Member and this is my first Post, so please bear with me if I mess anything up

Long Story Short:

I have just acquired a 'T' Reg mgb roadster from an executor sale

Which had been left in a Garage make that a very Small Garage! for 20 Years and still has the OO Tax Disc on the Windscreen!

This Garage is only just big enough for the Car to squeeze into and there is a big hole in the roof

Fortunately this Car has a Hard Top but other than that She's been neglected and left to her own devices

Covered in mushrooms/pigeon droppings and assorted crud but on the plus side She is Original and Totally unrestored with no signs of any rust

Although the Paint on the bonnet is bubbling, so is going to need a respray

The Problem is there is no room to work or get round her but I am pretty handy Mechanically as my other Car is a Jag

What I have done so far is to replace all the Rubber Fuel Pipes which had gone all Crispy and Broken

And then replaced the Points in the SU fuel pump which wasn't working but now is!

While Fuel is now getting to the Carbs, so is a lot of Air and I think the reason is all down to the Banjo Bolts and Fittings

When I took the Fuel Pump off, I noticed that on one side of the Banjo Fitting there was a recess

But forgot to memorise as to weather this recess should be facing the Inlets/Outlets on the Pump or facing the
Banjo Bolts

I have got this recess in the Banjo Bolt facing the Pump which with the benefit of hindsight, I now think is wrong?

The Fittings on the Pump had Two Copper Washers but I didn't notice any Washers or 'O' Rings in that Banjo Fitting Recess, when I took the Pump Off

Should there be any Washers or 'O' Rings to go in that Recess because as I say I didn't notice any when I took the Pump off

So what I know so far, or think I know, is that the Recess in the Banjo Fitting should be Facing away from the Pump and not facing towards it as it is at the moment

Does anyone know if that is correct and should there be any 'O' ring or Washer to go in that recess, as this is almost certainly where the Air is leaking in from

I've also read that excellent write up with Pics on the SU Fuel Pump but I'm still not clear about any Washers or 'O' Rings

So help wanted please!

If the threads in the pump body come all the way up to the face as in the attached then it takes a fibre washer both sides of the banjo fitting. But if the threads end at a recess then it takes an O-ring pump side and a fibre washer the other.

On the side of the banjo fitting facing away from the pump there should be a recess for the fibre washer, regardless of whether the pump body has recesses for O-rings or not.

See this (which you may be referring to but just in case you are not) from Dave Dubois, sadly recently departed, which is pretty clear.

Hi Paul

Many Thanks & Brilliantly explained!

My SU Pump is the Old Type with Threads right up to the Top of the Inlet/Outlets

While the Washers are still in place on the Pump Side, when I took the Banjos off

There were no Washers on the Banjo nut and they didn't fall out either

So I will have a look around my box of bits and bobs to see if I can find some

Or else go and get some from my local Hydraulic Shop Tomorrow

Thanks Again

John
