MG MGB Technical - substitute for castrol 20w50
hi 79mgb i have been using castrol 20w50 motor oil for years, but, it is getting harder to find it in the warious parts stores i frequent. i plan to start using castrol monograde 30, o.k. ? or do you have an alternative ? john |

Hi John A lot of differing thoughts on this. Many of us have switched to Valvoline VR1 20/50. It is made for tappet racing engines and supposedly has adequate Zink (ZDDP) for our engines. It is all I run now in my MGB and my mg td. |

Hello John, I di do not believe it is a good idea as frequently monograde are non-detergent and it is not adaptable for various outside temp. With a slight you could order a case from your part supplier. Search archives as I do not remember which spec requirement is mandatory for a MGB: Is it SE or SF or SG? But modern Castrol does not follow those old specs and adding ZDDP from MOSS is a good idea or like Bruce wrote VR1 is a fine choice. Cheers, Jean |
