MG MGB Technical - Swap master cyl, booster and pedals from 77 to 68?

I have a 68 GT and early 74 GT. The 74 absolutely needs a new master, and I believe the 68 is not far behind.

I have a 77 roadster parts car that looks like it has a reasonably fresh master, and it would be nice to have the integrated booster. Given that I have the entire pedal assembly, is it feasible to put the 77 master and booster assembly into one of the GTs?

The earlier cars have the master with the big round reservoir cap, and the brake plunger points to the rear of the car. The 77 has the rectangular reservoir, and the plunger points forward. These are all U.S. cars with dual brake systems.

I would be willing to do a bit of fabrication and welding, but I don’t want to turn this into my life’s work.

Thanks,
Charley

Charley,

The only thing to take care is a brake booster from a single carb. tu a dual carb. model; where filter clearance is a problem. And having a dual line brake system booster to fit it on a single line braking system: there is a problem of compatibility...

Charley-
This will not be a simple bolt-on affair as the mounting flange of the brake master cylinder is turned 90 degrees, so the mounting holes of the pedal box will not line up, and the appropriate later pedal box assembly is radically different, even having a different mounting hole pattern at its base that will require drilling a new pattern of holes into the body of the car. The aperture for the pedals is also different.

Thanks Steve & Jean,

I noticed the air filter issue yesterday, and when I took the assembly out of the 77, I saw the bolt pattern difference. Jean, in a US issue 68, they are already dual line.

I don't think I will bother with it on the rusty 68, but if I ever get around to rebuilding the rust-free 74 it might be worth the work to do the conversion.

I did a swap from a single line to a dual line on a 65 Sprite once, and it is not too bad once you are already surrounded with the welding equipment and scrap metal.
