I have the same noise on ma MGB GT. IT semmes to be normal.
But can anyone explain what is causing this "MG particular noise"

whilst there is a plastic cup type of thing that is to blame sometimes, in my case, its the gearknob! It was a hloow wooden thing - very swiushy - filled with araldite, very silent. for now.

My wood gearshift knob is also a talker. What is araldite?

Mine "swooshes" too. Araldite is a brand of two-part epoxy resin.

Thanks T Jenner. I think I'll fill mine. It is an irritating sound.

Thanks for that it looks like i will have to invest in some araldite or a leather gear knob and to top it off i have purchased a new wooden one just my luck.

For my Mk I I switched to a mundane factory style knob. It had a rubber bush that the shifter threaded into and you lock it by tightening a nut. No more vibrations or swishes. Not pretty but it's held up for 12 years.

You sure its not gearbox noise coming up through the shift rod? Does it happen all the time or just when youre accelerating? Maybe replacing the gearbox oil wouldn't be a bad idea.
