MG MGB Technical - The Overdrive Saga - conclusion
I finally gave up on figuring out why my newly rebuild OD gearbox would not engage and had my local british repair guys have a go. They went through everything I had checked, verified the solonoid was working properly, was adjusted properly, the operating valve was moving the proper distance, etc. Then they went through it again, and with the same result. So, as a last ditch effort the mechanic went through everything again, but with the car on the lift happened to shine his light up into I think was the non-return valve hole, and saw the valve seemed to be canted a little bit. He tapped it with a pin punch and it popped right out. After reinstalling everything, the OD worked perfectly. Apparently the valve was stuck slightly open so the correct pressure was not being reached. But the best part is the day my car was returned was the first sunny, dry day for weeks here in the northwest and I got to try it out. Went for a nice long run and I have to say the OD was totally worth it. The car is completely transformed at speed, running much more comfortably. I am really looking forward to summer this year!!
