MG MGB Technical - VIN info Needed

I have a freind that just aquierd an MG and we are tying to decod the vin for proper year and model. the vin is "GAN4U/74151G". Can someone direct me to where we can decode this(if it can be) or decode it for use.
We would like any or all info we can get our eyes on.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

Jeff,
The VIN does not seem correct, could the "A" be an "H"? GHN4U would be correct for a MKII North American specification Roadster of 68 or 69. The rest of the VIN number does not match either, a VIN starting with 7 (after the letter codes) would be a 66 year car with a sequence of GHN3U(N roadster) GHD3U(D GT) then the number. Assuming that the car is an MGB.

Sounds like it should read GHN4U 174151G to be in the GHN4U 1969 model year. Now here's the weird/cool part. My 69 mgb roadster VIN is GHN4U 174148G! Only 3 numbers different! And - wait for it - mine was also an orginal Arizona car. There should be a VIN plate on the dashboard, drivers side, and a plate on the right front fender, just in front of the radiator with the same numbers. Which should, of course, match your title.
Until I bought mine recently it had always been titled in Maricopa County. Maybe they even were sold by the same dealer and came in on the same shipment. My rear license plate has the orignal dealer sticker still on it, Flint British Motors of Phoenix. How about yours, Jeff?
Man, I do love my Arizona MG!

Isn't GAN4 the prefix for later model midgets?

Does the car have an "MGB" or "Midget" chrome piece on the trunk lid? It may be missing.

Are the headlights set back into a recess sculpted into the front fenders or do they stick out at the very front of the fender? If the former, this is an MGB; if the latter, it is a Midget.

The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust has the production records for the MG's built prior to 1980. For about $40 they can search their records and send you a build certificate that shows the exact built data, original color and factory installed options. It also includes serial numbers for things like the engine, transmission and rear axle.
