MG MGB Technical - water in fuel

could someone tell me if metholated spirit will get rid of water in my fuel tank (no drain plug), and if so how much to put in my '71 mgb
Dave Roper

Hi Dave

Meths will mix with water, and I cannot see it doing any good.

Water is heavier than petrol, so it will lie at the bottom of the tank. What about disconnecting the fuel line at the carbs and letting the fuel pump pump the water through?

If you don't have a drain plug, I don't know of any option other than removing the tank to dry it out.

Alcohols are capable of mixing with both polar (water) and non-polar (oil) liquids. Depending on the amount of water, amount of alcohol and gas present, methylated spirits will allow the water to mix with the gas and be burned out. Use specific products, such as Dri-Gas or other brands, specifiically designed for the purpose. Use of alcohol based solvents or pharmacy products is not recommended.

Big reason not to use "other" sourced alcohol for gas drying is it probably already contains a significant amount of water!
Check the label. Most alcohol products for consumer use are very watered down.

Water sits in two places in the B tank. It collects under the take off pipe in the 'well', but it also collects across the front edge of the tank which is the second (or first) lowest point. The best way without dropping the tank is as noted above - there are products on the shelf which will take out the water. A few years ago I took the trouble to drop my tank and emptied it completely. It was then possible to apply some anti rust fluid using a brush on a long extension through the sender hole in those two areas. The rest of the tank was shiny and 'new' inside.
