MG MGB Technical - What rpm needed to start engine?
I recall reading somewhere that the stock MGB engine needs to be turned over at about 100 rpm to start. Is that correct? I have just put a 4-synchro overdrive trans. in my MGB, and it won't start. (See the "Persistent starting problem" thread.) The rpms produced by my starter don't register on a tachometer. I marked the crankshaft pulley and counted revolutions as the starter turned the engine over. I'm getting about 120 rpm. Should that be enough to start the car? |

Easily. My old Dad used to start his Austin A35 with a quick flick of the handle through the front bumper. I should think it only achieved about 10 rpm, but off she went. |

M.E. I can't answer RPM exactly, but as mike mentioned few wngine rev. are sufficient to start it. If everything is OK. Cheers, Jean G. |

When you put the OD in your car, you might have done something to prevent if from starting, but other than screwing up the wiring, the OD shouldn't have anything to do with the starting problem. I suspect that with a good arm you could hand start an MGB, though I have never tried it. Charley |

The tach needle should flicker while spinning up the engine. If not, then it's a sure sign that something is amiss with your ignition points wiring, condensor, etc. |
