MG MGB Technical - whats needed for gearbox rebuild
I have a 1974 B that is stock with overdrive that I drive everyday so I dont want too much down time. Currently, the gearbox is loose and sloppy makes lots of clunky noises and sometimes pops out of 3rd on de-accel so I am going to rebuild the gearbox and maybe OD. I have 2 options, I will put in a new set of close ratio'd gears...what else should I buy before I start the rebuild...I have never re-built a gearbox before...do the standard 68-80 syncro rings work with aftermarket CR gears? thanks -J |

J. I know nothing about OD boxes or close ratio gears so I can't help there. I recently did my '67 three synchro box and replaced every bearing that came out of the box, fitted a new lay shaft, synchro rings, the needles on the 1st motion shaft and of course all seals and gaskets. I also replaced all the detent springs and balls in both the gear clusters and the selector shafts, a new 1st motion bush on the motor, clutch driven plate, clutch pressure plate and release bearing. If you have gone to the trouble of stripping the box down you may as well replace everything that wears. I didn't do any of the bushes on the 3rd motion shaft as they wear very little over the years, but you may need new ones if you fit a different gear cluster. Once I took the plunge I found it to be a very easy job. Read the manual and do it in the order they tell you and it falls apart and falls back together again remarkably easily. Cheers Tony |

J If the C/R gear set is straight cut you might want to reconsider. The transmission noise level will double or triple. If they aren't straight cut, it shouldn't be a problem. Lann |
