MG MGB Technical - Year model 'B' transmission compatibilities
I have read some threads about this topic but have a particular question. I have a '69 B with a transmission that is going out and it is mated to a GK engine,I suspect a very early run of that series, and the old style starter. It does have a 4 synchro transmission and the bell housing has been cut out for the Bendix assy on the starter . I have a chance to pick up a good used '80 model transmission for a good price and need to know if the pilot shaft dia. are the same on both transmissions, ostensibly they are from what I have studied. Mostly if they are interchangeable without further mods. as the vehicle exists now. I do not know why the hole was cut in the bell housing for a starter that did not come with that engine but in the intervening years someone in their wisdom did the deed. I can put up with the starter business and would cut a hole in the '80 housing easily enough if they would swap out with no other mods. necessary. I would likely replace the back plate ,flywheel, and starter however. Please someone let me know ,thanks |

Someone, along the way, fitted your old trans to a pre '68 car that used the early model starter. All 4 synchro transmissions used the later Lucas pre-engaged starter and the cut out, in the bellhousing, wasn't needed. The two transmissions will interchange with no modifications. If the '80 trans has overdrive, it will only function in 4th versus 3rd and 4th in the pre'77 models. RAY |
