MG MGF Technical - Close ratio gear box

Has anyone got one (like ptp sell)
Are they any good?
Do they make any difference?
Kingsley

I've not tried one on the MGF, but from experience on other cars, changing the gearbox can radically alter the whole feel of the car.

I reckon you can expect a dramatic improvement in how quick the car feels - as predictably the in-gear acceleration times will plumet.

Your final decision may be tempered by whether you feel the requirement for the 5th, overdrive cruising gear.
If you don't do many motorway miles, then this is unlikely to cause huge problems. The choice is yours.

Check out the Elise technical BBS and their archives. There are plenty of lizy owners out there with the CR g/b.

Cheaper alternatives may be available - check out the B&G web site, and also look into other ratios used in the PG1 gearbox for other cars, such as the Rover 200 etc. I seem to recall that the Rover BRM had a favourable gearset, along with the attractive-sounding limited slip torsen diff.

You should also consider swopping the flywheel for a lighter item to suit the new-found sporty ratios! :o)

Sounds as though you are building up an interesting car there Kingsley! :o)

Sure am :) and a big overdraft :(

just gota be brave enought to take it on the track!

Rob, or anyone - is there anywhere on the web that explains all the ratios and what they mean in real life?
I'v got very confused from the elise bbs :(
Kingsley

Just been looking if i understand correctly- The BRM gearbox is the same as the standard close ratio box for the elise. this seems to be the one that ptp, B&G & race speed sell. - exept without the limited slip dif.

how would i find out how much this is from MGR as a part?

Would the LSD be usefull in the F? would it fit ok?
