OK, changed the master cylinder. Still have the problem of loss of pressure after about 30 mins.
Trying to change the slave cylinder too. I can get the bolts off, but am having a big problem with the nut that surrounds the pipe going into the cylinder. I don't seem to have a spanner that fits it. It's like it's an imperial size as opposed to metric (I hope this is making sense to someone). So now I'm well and truly stuck. Any advice - apart from take it to a garage! grateffully received.

ps gots some pics. Will write it all up over the next couple of weekends Rob.

Cheers Kieren.

IIRC there are specific spanners available for use with hydraulic unions like the ones used on the brake and clutch systems. As I have never done the work you've described I can't really help you out, but hopefully someone here with the expertise can. However, I'd also chat with a local garage mechanic and see if he has any thoughts on the subject...

Hi Kieren,

I have not been fiddling with the clutch /clutch cylinder yet - but surely the size should be 11 mm open ring spanner ? This is more or less a choosen size for brake-system unions. The spanner looks like any normal 11 mm spanner apart from the small slit that enables the ring to fit over the nut passing thru the pipe. Found at any DIY-outlet and saves many hash words...

Regards , Carl.

Thanks Carl. I have spoken to my MGF doctor, and he agrees with your suggestion, has spanner as described and is popping it round on his way home tonight for me to try.

Thanks to Rob, Carl, Ed and anyone else who helped me out over the last few weeks. The Little Red Rocket is now back on-line.
Managed to get the nut released for the hydraulic union last night using a brake spanner and some mole grips. The whole problem was a little rubber seal inside the slave cylinder that had just worn and gone soft. Not enough to pass fluid, which was why there was no leak, but enough to causse loss of pressure to the clutch.
Anyway, changed the cylinder, bled the system, everythings now 99%. The other 1% are questionmarks over 2 areas. As I was depressing the clutch, with the MGF doctor checking the backend, he said there was a little movement of the plate that the slave cylinder was bolted onto. He believes this shouldn't move at all, and wonders if there's an aftermarket restriction kit.
The only other question was whether or not there should be a plastic washer where the pin goes through the fork for the pedal to the Master cylinder. It's all back together, but again, there seems to be a little play. There is one on the brake pedal, and it may have dropped in behind the carpet, but I can't find one. Just wondered if anyone knew for sure.
Anyway, all in all, I'm very happy. I have now changed the 2 cylinder's myself, have a much better understanding of how a clutch system works, have learned an important virtue in patience and have had great fun doing it - no garages or bell boys, just the help from you guy's - isn't that what it's all about. Bring on the next Essex and Luton meets - I'll try to be there...

Cheers
