MG MGF Technical - I need an engine. Alternative Rover sources?

Hi

Its been a while, but my troubles still continue. My VVC is still off the road (months) and now I'm in need of an bottom half engine, if not the complete thing if cheaper. I thought it was all fine, but the problem of water in the cylinder is still there so it seems its a (literally) deeper problem.

For starters, any good numbers to try ringing for spares?

Also, what alternative vehicles can I look out for as a source for an early '98 VVC engine replacement? Any Land Rovers for example?

Many thanks.

Julian,

My advise would be cut your loses and buy a secondhand engine for £600.
Or if your feeling flush a new one from Rover for £1500.

There is absolutely no point continuing repairing a knackered engine since at 40/hour its cheaper to buy a new one / replacement and start from a fresh.

Midland MGF have been recommended for secondhand spares.
But if you want deal, just get a copy of exchange and mart and look under the rover section for parts and salvage.

You should be able to source a good vvc engine for next day delivery at £400 to £600.

VVC is rarer, but still available,

Rover 200 coupe had vvc is later models
Rover 200 VI had it as well

Ideally get an engine number for the engine you are being offered and check its actually a vvc. So long as it is your OK.

(Before someones moans about second engines, dont forget that after a major water leak most engines are thoroughly internally rusted as well as overtly stressed as a result of HGF.)

Transplanted form the K midget board...
"I paid 750+VAT for a complete VVC engine (inc delivery plenum injectors fuel rail altenator etc.) everything except the ECU back in Feb 2000. I think 1.8i's are cheaper.

I would give the following numbers a ring and have a chat:

K Series Breaker 1 01234 765555
K Series Breaker 2 0121 459 6866
K Series Breaker 3 0161 429 0226
K Series Breaker 4 0121 753 2898
K Series Breaker 5 0800 056 0281

I would be careful about buying a 2002 1.8K, there are differences such as ECU & injectors."

Thanks, i'll try those.

How do I go about checking an engine if i get its number then? Is it simply the format of the number that shows its a VVC?

Thanks

Hi Julian,

sorry to hear that all the works you had didn't solve the trouble :(

Not sure about the VVC engine code.
I think it could be the 'K' at the fifth digit of the engine type.
i.e.
18K4 KN6 (sample)
18K4 K..

To be confirmed ! ... or not.
The code the for the MPI engine would be then an 'F' at that location.
18K4 F.. ????

Regards
Dieter
PS what will you do with the old VVC engine intake manifold assy :)) ? Any chance to get hands on it ?

Dieter K.

Hi Dieter

You're sorry? Not as sorry as I!! What a pain, after all this time the damn thing is still lame. so now the bottom engine diagnostics begin - cracked liner? corrosion? I don't know.

No one wants to sell just a bottom engine either - just complete ones, so its expensive too.

(although I haven't rang ALL those numbers yet, still to do)

As for what happens to the old engine - i'll be repairing it whatever, and keeping it as a spare if I use a replacement! What use could you possibly have for it... ;o)
