MG MGF Technical - Illuminated Cigar Lighter Malarky

I have, on my desk, the component parts of the cigar lighter. When I leave the office, I plan to grab some connector's and wire from Halford's, hook it all up as per the excellent instructions on Rob's Web-Site, and Bingo - have a little orange ring by my ash-tray.
Where does the light come from ? I can't see a bulb. Am I missing something here ?

Cheers

A number of us did this a couple of years back when some one discovered that the cigar lighter has the bulb already in place - just connect it and BINGO !

Hi Kieren- I can't claim to be the author of those instructions- they are Richard Eaton's hard won efforts (http://www.mgfworld.co.uk)

According to Richard, the bulb should be in the ciggie lighter all ready to be wired up. If yours hasn't got one, then you'll sadly have to get one from somewhere. Halford's sell a ciggie lighter that is one of the instrustry 'standard' types- and looks nearly identical to the lighter that Rover uses. If the worst came to the worst I guess you could buy one of these and cannablise it for the necessary parts. Hardly ideal- unless anyone else has a cunning suggestion?

Rob, I'd have thought they'd all be the same size - do remember someone posting that they've got a Bentley badged cigar lighter, just went to a parts dept and bought one. I'd also swear (without actually measuring and stuff) that the part on my Metro is identical - same illuminating ring, but connected aready.

Hmm... wonder if those self-adhesive MG badges that you get for the gear knobs are the same size s the op of the ciggie lighter?

:-)

Wow, that has to be the easiest modification ever !! Thanks everyone AGAIN!! All working fine again now

Kier 'n' Scarlet - Checked the lighter after the 80 minute drive home Thursday night - cool as a cucumber. Didn't seem to have any excess heat at all.

Just finished it this afternoon. Found it easier than Richard Eatons instructions (although they were excellent) I didn't use a soldering iron or female spade thingy. I just got a bit of speaker wire and tied it to the metal dobrie on the bulb bit and rammed the other end into the hole thing which gives the ciggy lighter the charge.

Just waiting for darkness now....hmmm. Managed to lose a screw holding the ciggy box to the metal thingy underneath though.

Right going back to Rob Bells 'K&N Heatshield thingy'.....make note lots of ice cubes works only for a short period of time.........

The cigar lighter from Rolls/Bentley parts is identical to the one you can buy as a MG accessory except costs just over half the price. Its not badged. Its just the lighter, it doesn't come with the surround.

Scarlet , after all you've done to your car and you haven't even got a glowing cigie lighter - shocking.
Matt

Wired mine to the circuit which illuminates the switches so it comes on with the lights. The proffesional touch!

Usually my girlfriend doesn't pay much attention to my MGF as long as the windstop is up when she's in the car when the roof is down.

However over the weekend she noticed I wired up the light around the ciggie lighter and said "whys your ring alight".

Well I chuckled........I'll get me coat.

..and a bucket of water to put the flames out!!

Well, if it bolts on, clips into place, screws together or can be painted easily then i'm your man. If it involves messing around with electrics, glueing or sewing then get someone else (i can recommend Mike Satur!!!)
