MG MGF Technical - Is it the driveshafts or gearbox?

I have noticed a mild knocking that I can just feel through the gearstick when accellerating or deccellerating. Today it has gotten worse and now I can hear a clunking that sounds like worn uni joints. It happensd at low speed in second gear if I let the car over run on atrailing throttle and then accelerat slightly. Also happens at 60-75kph in 5th gear. the car is running well and the gearbox feels fine.

Any Ideas folks?

First check the engine mounts and their rubber bushings. If they are worn/weak the same type of problem is noticed. Usually not enough power from the K-engine to upset the driveshaft joints or splines ;O)

Check the drive shaft nuts at the wheel hubs.

Sounds very similar symptoms to my daughters car. 1996 and 100K plus miles. Replacement drive shafts fixed it. I could rattle both the joints by hand. The short one was the worst but changed both courtesy of MGF Centre.

Thanks for the hints guys.

I couldn't find anything wrong with the engine mounts and although there was a small amount of play in the driveshafts the noise got worse over the next few days and felt like the engine was rocking abck and forth.

Took it to mg workshops who diagnosed worn subframe bushes which meant that everything was moving.

They could not buy new ones in Oz so ordered some slightly oversize Ford Poly bushes and machined them to fit, so this should improve the suspension location as well as fix the knocking.

Pick the car up tomorrow and take it for a 4 wheel alingment so I am looking forward to feeling the difference.
