MG MGF Technical - Just out of interest:- Resonator box - Why?

Since having fitted my 2001 1.8i with a K&N, I've always wondered what the mysterious Resonator Box was that's mentioned in so many posts - I assumed that it must have been something far down near the apparently fake air intake duct. As I managed to fit the cold air tubes easily enough, I didn't worry about it.

I've just seen a picture of the original filter with resonator box fitted and realised that this looks nothing like the filter box that I removed from my car! My filter box (sat in the garage) is about twice the width. Clearly the later models had this modified airbox and no resonator.

My question is - what was the resonator box for and why was it removed from the later model?

Forgot to add - credit where it's due - saw the pictures on Dieter's site.
Is there any part of the MGF that this guy doesn't know intimately ;-)

Nothing unfortunately from inside the engine.
Had to sell it immidiately while dismanteling the bought wreck.

May be at any time, though I'm not keen on this due to own engine blow up ... LOL.

Anyway, the resonator box seams to having been added to the early design of the MGF due to emission and noise regulations. Was the opinion of us ín an old thread.

It' is useful to prevent the engine from mud and water getting through the wheel house ;)

Yup, Dieter is an MGF 'hero'! :o)

Regarding the resonator box, I think that Dieter is right: it was there for drive-by-noise abatement.

You might reasonably ask why later cars can therefore do without it. To this, the answer is I'm not sure. Perhaps there is a difference between the old and the new design of airboxes that makes the old resonator redundant on newer cars. But one thing is for sure: getting rid of the resonator was a 'good thing' because the original intake route was very inefficient for high rpm- power.
