MG MGF Technical - K&N + Front Splitter

Just fitted the front splitter and was wondering what effect it might have in terms of air flow into the K&N ducting.

I believe that the splitter is meant to reduce air pressure under the car and this could mean that there is a negative pressure gradient across the length of the ducting.

However, if I remember my physics correctly the low pressure must be coming from an increased flow (Bernoulli's Law).

So, with lower pressure and increased flow are we going to get more or less air flowing through the ducting?

I'm also not hugely happy with the positioning of the ducting as it got torn off during a recent session with Andy Walsh at North Weald. Now that it is more securely fastened I can just imagine ripping off the hydragas pipe.

Not sure on the effect the Splitter will have on the underbody aerodynamics, but your description appears to tally with my limited understanding of the principles involved.

Tom Randell does (did?) a rather neat (and inexpensive) aluminum mounting bracket for the K+N induction pipes. It hooks onto the rear subframe, relocating the pipes slightly upwards and directly forwards, making them less susceptible to damage, ensuring they point in the right direction and in the event that they do get caught (highly unlikely in thier new position), they are not attached to anything that could be damaged with them. Tom is a regular on this BBS, hopefully he will spot this thread and post.

Hi John,

no worries with regard to the splitter and the function of those K&N pipes. Talking about pressures in this context is confusing, and not that relevant as what you want is for those cooling ducts to be hanging into the moving airflow. What the splitter does is reduce the amount of air moving under the car. Too much air, and the movement becomes sluggish and stagnant - bad news for the cool air ducts as they do not rely on air pressure to work.

Fitting a splitter is good, as it increases the speed of the air under the car, and thus will be accelerated up into those ducts and projected at the filter. So if anything, the splitter should increase the efficiency - not reduce it. The amount of debris collection in my 57i's ducts and on the filter itself, on my splitter equipped F would seem to bare this out!
