MG MGF Technical - k+N versus Piper Viper and ITG Maxogen

Hi Guys

Has anyone change a K+N airfilter to either the Piper Viper or the ITG Maxogen units

Is there any noticeable improvement on a VVC if I upgraded ?

Or should I spend my pennies elsewhere?

Whats the general view out there

Cheers all

Hi Stu,

There is certainly improvements to be had by upgrading to a Maxogen, or indeed any filter with an enclosed airbox. Question is, is it worth the investment? I'll leave that question to be answered who has choosen that route.

Personally, I've taken an alternative: currently have a cheap heat shield fitted, but plan an airbox conversion (princely sum 5 quid from scrap yard) in the near future. See http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/new_airbox.htm for more info :o)

I definitely would go for the ITG Maxogen air induction kit. The expensive one.
The improvement from the ITG kit and a TB 52mm on a VVC is tremendous. The sound becomes much much better. Just perfect. undescribable.

Cheers

I changed from a K&N to an ITG on my MPi, the difference was very noticable, an unforseen improvement being the noise.
It's quite a bit quiter than the K&N, which i was finding tiring on long journys. the car seems to pick up much better, but i did change my throttle body at the same time.

Did you see the F at Silverstone with the Yellow Trophy spoiler at The MSRE stand. It had a 52 mm throttle body, ITG Maxogen, a breathed on head and Phoenix exhaust without a cat. This car has 138 bhp measured at the fly.

We strongly reccommed the 52 mm body and ITG Maxogen is the way to go.

You should allow budget for these accessories and Optimax too.

Must have missed you Martin - where abouts were you?

Just had a look at your web page (www.msre.co.uk). Good luck with the new venture. I haven't seen Matt for some time (web master of www.roverbrm.co.uk) - looks like things are going well.

Are you guys able to source BRM heater control knobs at reasonable prices?
Rob Bell

... as well as the BRMīs heater box...

just bought BRM tweeter covers for € 7,- from my MGR dealer. I thought this was quite cheap compared to Uk prices. How come (Ok, way of topic)

cheers,
David.

or just the heater box cover eh David? :o)

No idea why BRM parts are cheaper in euroland: difference in tax???

Thanx guys,

already have the 52mm body fitted and use Optimax so it looks like the ITG is the way to go !!

Guys, all this talk about ITG Maxogen and 52mm TB's - has anyone installed these on a bog standard MPI? If I went down this path, would I realise any tangible benefits in performance? Are these upgrades/mods straight forward to install?

Thanks,

Phil

Phil, I have a 52mm TB to go on, so can't comment just yet, but from others have said, yes it is a worth while modification (I'd guess it'll be worth about 5 bhp from descriptions people have made regarding the fitment of these TBs to 1.8 MPis).
Rob Bell

Rob, thanks mate, I'll wait until you've installed and tested yours before I do anthing. Besides, it looks like I'm up for a brand new anti-theft ecu @ AUD$1000 plus fitting so I'll have to wait a while I think. Not happy Jan!

Okay, no problem Phil, I'll let you know when I've fitted it, and how I find it.

Although ITG kit unquestionably performs better than K&N kit, especially at low revs, I suspect this is due to the enclosed airbox rather than the filter itself.

The ITG is expensive, but it saves a lot of hassle and looks the part, but you can get the same increased power and reduction in noise by enclosing the K&N using either the flower-pot mod or Rover 820i housing together with 100mm inlet hose directed under the car or to the side inlet.

My guess is the the same applies to the Piper filter, but I've seen no data to support it.

Rob: there's an error in the path to the image of the heat shield picture on your page (remove the "/i/" from the path).

I like the sound of the Rover 820i airbox - I wonder where there's a scrappy around here that I can help recycle a part :-)

The MSRE stand was together with Peter Burgess at Silverstone for those interested. The car which I mentioned earlier in this thread is an mpi and was on the stand that day.

Anyone wishing to do the simple upgrade to a 52mm body contact sales@msre.co.uk for a quote and availability.

BRM heater knobs - No sorry, but we have some BRM wheel centres.

Thanks for highlighting the broken link Neil - I'll get on and fix that :o)

With respect to the Rover air box install, you'll also need a bracket to attach it to where the OE airbox mounted, a flexible duct that Demon Tweeks retail (by the meter sadly), some 100 mm ali duct from a DIY store (Wickes), and an adapter for the airbox to 100 mm duct.

That's the tricky bit. I think I am going to make an MDF ring as a temporary stop gap. Not aerodynamically clever having a 100 to 70 mm step: would be better if the airbox intake at a radiused end like a trumpet. Anyone have any suggestions???

Does anyone know if an ITG Maxogen can also be fitted to a MY 2001 MPI ? I heard from someone that ITG's can only be fitted to pre-2000 MGF's.
Ivan Meersman

Try plubing fittings: 100mm isn't far off gutter diameter (4") and 70mm is the "small" guttering size from what I remember and I KNOW you can get adapters between the two!
