MG MGF Technical - Knocking sound ?

Hi all

I seem to have developed a knocking or dull rattle from my rear drivers side over the last couple of days and it appears to be getting worse ? I live up a gravel drive which has numerous small potholes and its really noticeable when driving slowly (5mph) up the drive... If i open the drivers door and rest my hand on the area below the air intake i can really feal it knock.. The suspension also sounds a little more 'squeaky' although this could be just me imagining it...

I'm no Mechanic, anyone got any ideas...

I was planning to get it into Mike's for a full Polyflex bush set in a few months but this might mean its got to be sooner rather than later...

Any advice appreciated

Stu,

Try opening the drivers door and jumping up and down on the door sill to make the car bounce up and down. If you can hear the noise, get someone else to do the energetic bit and whilst they're doing that see if you can locate the source of the noise.

This was how the bodywork crack I showed you last week was discovered.

Yea I remember you pointing it out ! Sods law this is, isn't it.. After meeting up and satisfying myself my suspension was okay compared to your techspeed setup.

I only noticed this Sunday when coming back up the drive but i'm sure its getting worse... Actually feels like some thing is knocking on the outer skin ?

But I'll do what you say and see if it sheds any light !

Stu,

Good luck and let us know what you find. Others more expert in their knowledge of the bushes and bearings type stuff may be able to help you pinpoint it.

i have had similar noise and the prob was the tack welds on the suspasion plates started to come unwelded front and back and had to have rewelded, there were 3or4 spot welds and was very difficult to pin point, but when rewelded noise stopped,it was like a kind of slaping nolse metal to metal,ps only noticed this trouble after had suspension lowered and adj shocks fitted,i also had strengthening plates welded on rear shock plates {mike satur ones}hope this helps .Dave T6 DCM.

Ok guys

Well I took the car up the drive a few times this afternoon to try and narrow down this rattle/knock I seem to have aquired and its definately centred around the sill virtually directly below the drivers door post so to speak.. But can clearly be felt along the whole sill..

It feels like something is loose and rattling against the body work from the inside but i can't see anything obviously wrong.

Does anything run through the sill ?? This side of the car has only just been rebuilt by Moto-build ( 2 weeks ago) so I think I will pop in there tomorrow unless anyone has any other ideas...

Dave, I've looked for the cracks you had on yours and can't see anything...

regards all

Stu

Stu,

I didn't think it would be the same problem as my noise i.e. bodywork cracks - just suggesting a way of tracking the noise down. Anyway, sounds a bit of a co-incidence doesn't it - rebuilt side and now a rattle from that area. I'd definitely call Moto-build and ask them to take a look.

Stu, it'sexactly as i had you will have a job to see anything wrong as said before it took me ages to find, try get someone to stand on sill jump up and down, wedge a screwdriver under suspension brackets by welds and apply some pressure see if noise goes ,you will hardly see any movement but the noise is quite loud and annoying not to say worrying, worth another look ,mine went front and back, cheers Dave.
